Spring Term 2024

 W/C Monday 25th March 2024

Wow! What an end to the term! Well done to everyone for an absolutely excellent last week. We are so proud of you all for your hard work and can-do attitudes.

In English this week, we have finished our book 'Cinnamon'. This was great as we were able to reflect on our predictions and decide if we were correct or if the book surprised us... WE have looked at adding inverted commas to speech and varying sentence types this week to improve our writing.

In Maths this week, we have finished the first half of our 'Decimals' topic. The children have learnt how to divide 1 and 2 digit numbers into decimals. A tricky concept, but one the children took to with gusto! Well done for all of the commintment to achieve in this topic so far.

In R.E. this week, we have looked at Jewish celebrations, concentrating on Jewish weddings. The children enjoyed learning about this ceremony and reflected on how it was different to a Christian wedding.

In Science this week, we have looked at changes in state when looking at materials. The children watched experiments showing what happened to water, ice, wax and chocolate when they were exposed to heat energy. The children were able to use scienctific language, including 'liquid', 'solid', 'gases' and 'vapour' to describe what happened to each material. Excellent work everyone.

We just wanted to wish everyone a wonderful Easter holiday. Spend time with family and friends and enjoy the time off together. See you next term!

W/C Monday 18th March 2024

Well done to everyone in Year 4 this week. We have had another smashing week of hard work and commitment to achieve. Keep up the good work everyone!

In English this week, we have continued with our work on our book 'Cinnamon'. The children have now progressed onto using similes to describe the Tiger. There were some absolutely fantastic ones including 'The Tiger's stripes were as black as a midnight sky'. Mrs Gaskin's definitely had goosebumps reading that one!

In Maths this week, we have continued to work on our topic of 'Decimals' where the children progressed onto decimals as hundreths. They worked so hard on this and their understanding of the topic was evident in the work they produced. Well done everyone!

On Friday afternoon, we all took part in the Holi festival on the field. The children had a ball celebrating this festival with their friends and getting paint all over Mrs Gaskin! Mrs Gaskin wanted to say a special thank you to the children that painted her like a rainbow...

One more week to go everyone. Keep up the hard work!

W/C Monday 11th March 2024

Another excellent week in Year Four. We have both been blown away with the children’s positive attitude and commitment to their learning this week. Well done everyone!

In English this week, we have started work on our new book ‘Cinnamon’. The children have been making predictions of what will happen in the book based on the front cover and the first page. (We ask that you don’t read this book at home yet as we are keeping what happens a secret for our English lessons!) Some of the predictions so far have been imaginative and exciting; ranging from Cinnamon being lost in the forest and raised by tigers to Cinnamon having magical powers and defeating evil! Needless to say, we are raring to find out more about the book!

In Maths this week, we have introduced our new topic of ‘Decimals’. The children were on fire this week, cumulating in an absolutely outstanding lesson on Friday with the children understanding the concept of ‘tenths as a decimal’ and being able to use their mathematical language to explain their working process. Just WOW!

In History this week, we have been exploring the Ancient Greek’s Myths and Legends. The children loved learning about Pandora’s Box, Theseus and the Minotaur and Persephone and the Underworld. All excellent Myths and Legends, in which the children were able to identify the lesson being taught. We also realised that Zeus may not be as great as he makes out!

Well done to all of our Star Awards and our Star Writer this week. It was such a hard decision for us to pick this week as you have all been incredible. Until next week!

W/C Monday 4th March 2024

Wow! What a week we have all had in Year Four. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the children for their hard work, kindness and resilience this week. It has been an absolute pleasure to have them.

In English this week, we have been working on our big write up of our historical stories based on the book ‘The Lion and The Unicorn’. Some of the work produced has been excellent and we look forward to seeing the finished product next week. In Maths this week, We have continued with our Fractions topic. Specifically concentrating on addition and subtractions of whole and mixed number fractions. The children have worked extremely hard to understand this concept and the work has really paid off. Well done!

In Art this week, we had a lot of fun becoming fashion designers as part of our ‘Art in Industry’ topic. The children were asked to create a set of fashion garments of their own choosing and some of the detail in the design blew us away. Excellent work. In History this week, we have been looking at archeologocial sites in Ancient Greece. The children enjoyed exploring and researching about site such as the Parthenon and Ephesus.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the children in Year Four for making us feel so welcome in your class. We look forward to a wonderful term with all of you.

W/C Monday 26th February 2024

Another great week this week. The children have been amazing this week and it has been a pleasure. In Maths, we have been continuing to work on our Fractions. In English, we have practiced using our relative clauses in our writing, ready for our big write up next week.

In Georgraphy this week, we have looked at the question "Why are the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn important?" The children worked on identifying the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn on our globe and explained how they match the orientation of the Earth’s rotational axis to the ecliptic plane around the sun. A very interesting topic for the children this week.

I will now be handing over to Mrs Grayling and Mrs Gaskin. Have a wonderful rest of your half term. Remember, Work Hard; Be Kind; Achieve Greatness!

W/C 19th February

What a triumphant week this week. The children have worked so hard in all of their learning. In Maths, we have been counting, partitioning and putting fractions on a numberline. In English, we have written a character description about mean Joyce; a setting description based on the beautiful countryside and a letter from the point of view of Lenny, the evacuee in the story.

In Geography, we have been looking at the lines of latitude and longitude: locating the Arctic Circle, learning about the weather and how animals adapt to their surroundings. We had our most successful swimming session, so many children have made incredible progress. Mr Godson has been dancing like a Greek, much to the amusement of the class.

W/C 12th February

Welcome back to term 4. A big term ahead and lots of challenges await.

In English, we will be reading The Lion and The Unicorn, a lovely book about war time in England. The children will be using their emotive writing skills as well as writing some descriptions of characters and settings across this unit.

In Maths, we have moved on to fractions. The children will be linking lots of their previous knowledge to this unit as this will support their progress throughout.

We continue to swim on a Wednesday, and have our PE session on a Tuesday with Mr Godson. Madamn Roche will continue to teach French on a Tuesday and Miss Cragg will be teaching Music and RE on a Wednesday.

W/C 8th January

Now the Christmas dust has officially settled, we are ploughing hard into our learning.

In Maths, we are looking at the formal and informal written methods for Mulitiplication. We have been noticing related facts, so if we know 2 X 4 we also know 2 X 40 and 20 X 4. The children have found this a really useful tool for multiplying.

In English, we continue to read 'Until I met Dudley'. It has generated a lot of crazy ideas about how some every day objects work. We have had barrels of laughs over some outrageous thoughts on this!

We have been learning about Europe in Geography; looking at where it is compared to other continents, its size in comparison to others around the world and what countries make up Europe.

We have looked at Habitats and Ecosystems in Science. Children initially found it difficult to tell them apart, but have now consolidated that learning.

W/C 1st January

   HAPPY NEW YEAR! Welcome back.

We have hit the ground running, this term. Straight in with Maths (Multiplication and division) and English (Until I Met Dudley). We also began swimming lessons first day back, which was brilliant for the children. All children entered the pool confidently and I'm sure they'll be even more amazing in the weeks to come!

We started our Ancient Greek unit this week by finding out when the Greek era was in comparison to other periods in time we learn at Church Lane.

We also had the amazing Rock Kidz in on Friday. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and even came out winners in the inter-class competition! WELL DONE, YEAR 4!
