Summer Term 2022

W.C 11.07.22

Thursday and Friday – Miss Cragg

In our Maths lesson this week we were tackling solving word problems using addition or subtraction. We are remembering how to use column method and getting better at deciding which function to use. We worked especially hard on the questions which needed us to work out how much an item cost when we weren’t given this information! Can you work this one out? A fruit salad and juice box costs 85p. A fruit salad and two juice boxes costs 98p. How much does a fruit salad cost? How much is the juice box?

No English to complete but plenty of writing in our Science lessons. We were learning how plants reproduce so we dissected a gladioli flower and labelled the parts we found. We can identify the anther, filament (stamen), stigma, style (carpel), sepal and ovary and have been learning about how bees help with pollination. Then we learned about transpiration, the process by which roots and stems suck up water and dissected a piece of stem to see how it travels around the plant. Next we created a plant fact file which showed off all we have learned, what plants need and how they disperse their seeds. We have learned some big scientific words – ask us about pollination, cross pollination, transpiration, germination and photosynthesis!

It's going to be very, VERY hot on Monday and Tuesday. Please make sure children come to school in their PE kits equipped with plenty of water, a sun hat and sun cream. We want to avoid any cases of spontaneous combustion where possible! Stay cool and be safe out there. One more week to go!

W.C. 04.07.22 - Monday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

Another week down in Year 2.

In Maths, we have been recapping what we have learnt throughout the year through word problems. We have looked at number facts, finding the equivalence and using a number square to add and subtract. Well done Year 2, some great Maths work.

In English, we have started our new book 'The Dragon Machine'. We had to go outside on the Muga to find where all the dragons were hiding. We found them under the bench, on the floor, next to the table, above the chair, amongst the trees and behind the football net. We had to use these prepositions to explain where dragons liked to hide and explaining why they did these things. We have also looked at prefixes, we read part of our new story and had to spot the prefixes used, we then used these to write our own sentences predicting what might happen next.

In History, we used all our previous knowledge about the three Queens and debated which one made the most impact and why. This was really fun to argue about with our friends! In Geography, we finished our unit off by comparing Mugurameno and Sleaford. We discussed with our friends what they both had, which was the same and how they were different.

Thursday and Friday – Miss Cragg

In our Maths lessons this week we were continuing our work on word problems and efficient methods of problem solving. We had to find missing numbers, work out the differences when we had one part and knew the whole of a part whole model and try to remember how to use column method for addition and subtraction!

In English we were carrying on learning about our new book, 'The Dragon Machine'. We wrote a letter to George giving him advice on what he could, should and what we would do about his pesky dragon problem. We included a range of conjunctions and we also popped in a few words with the prefix ‘un’ to make our writing even more exciting. On Friday we revisited our learning about prepositions, writing a dragon encyclopaedia entry telling people where they might find a dragon. Exciting stuff!

We’ve finished our materials unit in Science by learning about and identifying the properties of different materials, explaining why they are best suited to their jobs and using vocabulary such as transparent, opaque, translucent, hard, soft, rough and smooth. We did really well on our end of unit quizzes too! Two weeks to go Year 2, we can do this.

W.C 27.06.22 - Monday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

A busy week this week in Year 2.

In English this week, we wrote our own leaflets all about wolves. We talked about what wolves look like, what they eat and where they live. Our leaflets were amazing and Mrs Barratt was super impressed with them!

In Maths, we have been working on position and direction, particularly left and right, clockwise and anti-clockwise, full turns and half turns and quarter turns. We must remember to move our book around to help us remember which way we were facing!

In History, we learnt all about the British Empire under Queen Victoria's reign and how she saw the empire grow and Britain become the greatest and most powerful country in the world!

On Wednesday, we all got to join in with Sports Day! We had the most amazing day. We completed a round robin of sporting activities all morning where we had to work in our teams to get as many points as possible. In the afternoon, we competed in our sporting races including, egg and spoon, obstacle, flat race, sack race and the relays. We had an amazing day and were really proud of our friends- everyone tried their best and were super!

Thursday and Friday – Miss Cragg

In our Maths lessons this week completed our learning on position and direction with a final look at patterns with turning shapes and describing the turns by using vocabulary such as quarter turn, half turn, full turn, left, right, clockwise and anti-clockwise. We have worked really hard to try to master this and are doing really well. Then we moved on to the first lesson in a new block, all about using our previously learned maths knowledge in problem solving using efficient methods to help us answer word problems.

In English we assessed an area that we found tricky in our most recent Big Write, our leaflet about wolves. We did not use many cause and effect words so we did some additional learning about them then chose a sentence from our leaflet to edit and change. Our writing is looking beautiful and is jam packed with some brilliant features to make it really exciting.

We worked hard with Junior Jam this week in our French, ICT and PE lessons and then were lucky enough to have another PE lesson on Friday! We just can’t get enough of moving our bodies this week and are determined to be the fittest Year 2 class in the land! Thank you to all of the grown-ups for their wonderful support on Sports Day, we had lots of fun.

W.C 20.06.22 - Monday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

Another hot week this week! The children have done amazingly well to keep going!

This week in Maths we have continued to look at pictograms with different scales- we have had to be careful counting the pictures! We have also looked at block diagrams, the children were amazing at this, they were able to complete and answer questions using a block diagram.

In English, we are continuing reading our book 'Wolves'. We have created a character splat using adjectives to describe the wolf. Then we wrote our own character description telling the reader all about wolves using our adjectives from Monday. On Wednesday we wrote multi-clause sentences using cause and effect words.

In Topic this week, we have learnt about Queen Elizabeth the second and why she is a significant individual. Did you know, she has two houses; Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, also that she loves corgis? In Geography, we looked at the human features found in Mugurameno such as, schools, shops and houses.

Thursday and Friday – Miss Cragg

In our Maths lessons this week we finished off our learning in statistics by completing a lesson on word problems using our knowledge of tally charts, block graphs and pictograms. We then started our new block of learning on position and direction, describing movement using mathematical vocabulary such as forwards, backwards, up, down, left and right.

In English we have continued our non-fiction learning about wolves, learning how to alphabetise and what to do when we have two words that begin with the same letter. We labelled photographs of wolves, wrote captions and then put them in alphabetical order. On Friday we began to plan our next piece of writing, a non-chronological report, using all of the information we have researched and found out about wolves. Can’t wait to read them Year 2!

In our Science lesson this week we were considering waterproofing and absorbency, testing a variety of materials to discover their properties, writing a prediction, gathering data then writing a considered conclusion.

Sports day is on Wednesday 29th June – please ensure you are aware of which house your child is in, what colour t-shirt they need and provide them with a water bottle, sunhat and sun cream for the day (hopefully the weather forecast is wrong as it's looking a little damp at the moment!). Thank you for your support, we look forward to seeing you there at 1:30pm.

W.C 13.06.22 - Monday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

This week in Maths we have been busy with our temperature, we have read and measured using a thermometer. We really enjoyed these lessons; we were really good at understanding what the scale went up in which helped us know the temperature. Our next unit of work is statistics, on Wednesday we started looking at tally charts. We know how to record a tally and what happens when we get to 5. We even had a go at making a tally chart and asking our friends what their favourite ice-cream was.

In English, we started our new book 'Wolves' by Emily Garrett. This book is so much fun.  We have looked at a range of adjectives used to describe wolves from stories that we have read and know, including our new book and had to place them on a zone of relevance e.g., friendly and menacing. We also had chance to read a range of books all about wolves, fiction and non-fiction. We really enjoyed looking at these books and getting to see the difference between the two types of book genres.

In History, we learnt about the roles of women during the Victorian era under the reign of Queen Victoria. When Victoria first became queen, women were very much housewives and mothers. We then compared this to the end of her reign and how much life had improved.

On Tuesday afternoon, we had Mrs McCordick with us to teach us some Music ready for the 'Big Sing' next week. We then had PE with Mr Goodson on Wednesday afternoon.

Thursday and Friday – Miss Cragg

In our Maths lessons we were looking at pictograms, using our knowledge of tally charts to read them and to create our own. We know it is important to look at the key, especially when finishing off incomplete pictograms.

In English we were looking at the differences between fiction and non-fiction books, reading and sorting texts as well as identifying the features of the different genres. We wrote some sentences about wolves, looking at both information sentences and those that are rumours, or fiction.

In RE we completed our final lesson on Judaism, looking at the features of the synagogue and labelling them. We will finish the unit with a knowledge quiz to see what we have learned and what we can remember!

W.C 06.06.22 - Monday - Tuesday - Mrs Barratt

This is the final term in Year 2, this year has flown by!

Welcome back Year 2, we have made a cracking start to our final term together!

In English, we have planned and written a letter to Mr Clay to persuade him to let us on a trip of a lifetime because of all our hard work this year, particularly SATs. We have really worked hard to write these letters, you never know- Mr Clay might let us go to America or Australia!!

In Maths, we are working on measuring in grams and kilograms. We know how to use the weights to read the scales and work out which is heavier/ lighter or if they ae equal weights.

In topic this week, we have learnt about Queen Victoria the first and what impact she had on the UK. She developed the British Empire making us the most powerful country! Continuing our Geography topic, we looked at the physical features of Mugurameno, particularly the river. The people of Mugurameno use the river for many things including fishing, washing clothes, dishes and themselves, watering of their crops and transportation of goods by boats. We then compared this river and how we use the river Slea.

Wednesday - Friday - Miss Cragg

In Maths we moved on our learning about capacity to mililitres and litres. We can read the scale on a measuring jug and can answer tricky problem solving questions about how to measure 2l with a 5l and 3l bucket!

In English we wrote some absolutely amazing description about the Gruffalo as our writing task was to write a character description. We then used these descriptive adjectives to create the most amazing pieces including a range of punctuation, sentence openers and conjuctions. Well done Year 2, work to be proud of!

We also squeezed in an RE lesson learning about Bar and Bat Mitzvahs and noticing the similarities and differences between the ceremonies. We found it very interesting that girls are 12 when they become a Jewish adult and boys have to wait until they are 13!

W.C 23.05.22 - Monday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

What a week, we have completed the term and haven't we done well?!

In English this week, we have written our own explanation text all about the frog life cycle- we are amazing in Year 2 and wrote a toad-ally and frog-tastic text about the life cycle that really impressed the adults!

In Maths, we have continued to work on our time. We looked at different durations of time and compared them, also we have been looking at finding the end time.

For topic this week, we have continued with our Zambia work, but we have looked at a small rural village in the south called Mugurameno. We located this village on a map of Zambia. In History, we continued to learn about Queen Elizabeth 1 and what life was like in the Tudor/ Elizabethan age.

On Wednesday, we were lucky to get to have a party to celebrate all of our hard work over the last few weeks in our SATs tests and all of our writing that we have been doing. Our teachers are sooooooooo proud of us!!

Thursday and Friday – Miss Cragg

In Maths we finished off our learning about time, finding the start time in our lesson on Thursday which we tried really hard with. On Friday we began our next topic of learning, comparing mass, as we will be learning about weight, volume and temperature.

In our Science lessons we did an experiment based on our topic of materials, learning about the story of the Three Little Pigs and asking if we could use any material we felt like to make anything. We made houses for the pigs using strawberry laces, bread sticks and sugar cubes, and we tested them to see if the Big Bad Wolf could blow them down! After that it was time to plan our writing then write a recount about our experiment. Impressive stuff Year 2!

Have a great week off - you have worked so hard this half term and you really deserve it. We'll see you on Monday 6th June!

W.C 16.05.22 - Monday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

A fantastic week in Year 2, we are so close to the end of our SATs- we have done amazing so far!

In Maths, we have continued to look at time. We worked hard to tell the time to 5 minutes, we have cracked which side is to and which is past, so we just need to keep it up by practising at home too.

In English, we have continued with our book 'Tadpole's Promise' and we wrote our own setting descriptions where the willow tree sits and introduce the two main characters; caterpillar and tadpole. We had a great go at using a range of adjectives and noun phrases, as well as conjunctions to extend our ideas further.

In our non-core lessons this week, we have done some History 'Who was Queen Elizabeth 1?' We know she ruled the throne as a single woman, she refused to get married, so she didn't have any children to take over the throne from her. In Geography, we started out new unit ' Is everywhere in the world like Sleaford?'. Our first lesson was using atlases to find where Zambia is in the world. We now know, Zambia is in Africa and not near the sea.

On Wednesday, we were practising our singing with Mrs McCordick. We love Music on Wednesday's!

Thursday and Friday – Miss Cragg

We continued with learning how to tell the time in our Maths lessons on Thursday and Friday, looking at hours and days as well as durations of time.

In English we wrote a plan for our next piece of writing, an explanation text on how tadpoles turn into frogs. More writing for us in Science too when we wrote some instructions on how to make the perfect sandcastles based on our experiment last week.

One more week until half term!

W.C 09.05.22 - Monday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

Another really busy week for us this week, we have been busy completing our SATs tests, but have done an amazing job yet again!

In Maths, we have started looking at telling the time to the hour and half past the hour. We have been reading the time and showing the time on clocks. We have been amazing at this and ready for the next challenge of quarter to and past.

In English, we continued working on our current book 'Tadpole's promise' and had to find all the verbs. We then used these verbs to help us describe the actions. We then retold the story using pictures that had all been mixed up in the printer! Another great job by Year 2.

On Wednesday afternoon, Mrs McCordick came in and taught us some more Music - the glockenspiels. These were so much fun to play!

Thursday and Friday – Miss Cragg

On Thursday it was SATs time yet again, this time the Grammar paper for some of us. We are trying hard and thinking carefully, taking our time and reading the questions before answering. Well done Year 2, not long to go now. In the afternoon we had our Junior Jam teachers to do French, ICT and PE with us.

In Maths on Friday we continued to learn about time, recapping o’clock and half past and learning about quarter past and quarter to. We are beginning to notice the difference between past and to, and have talked about how to split the clock into half and quarters to demonstrate the changes. In English we began to plan our next Big Write which will be a descriptive piece about the setting of our current story, Tadpole’s Promise. We know we need to include words with suffixes, conjunctions, adjectives about the tadpole and caterpillar, noun phrases and adverbials as sentence starters. Plenty to cram in there!

In Science we began our sandcastle experiment in our materials topic. We talked about the question we were asking, our predictions, our equipment, the method we used, our data and our conclusions. What a busy week!

W.C 02.05.22 - Tuesday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

We are really lucky this week, an extra day of rest and one less day at school!

On Tuesday, we have worked hard, we started our SATs which will be completed over the course of the month in small groups. The children have started the Maths arithmetic and tried their best, we are super proud! On Wednesday we had a go at the first Reading paper, again the children were amazing.

In Maths we have looked at comparing lengths (cm and m). We decided whether they were longer or shorter than the other and how we knew- we found this easy!

In English, we started our new book 'Tadpole's promise'. This book is a lovely book with some fantastic pictures which we will be looking at and working on over the next couple of weeks. We started the book by talking about 'changes' that are artificial and natural e.g., an egg and traffic lights. We then discussed how an egg changes and what happens. We then used adverbs of time to write a chicken lifecycle. Did you know, a baby chick has an egg tooth to help hatch out the egg?

Wednesday afternoon, we were lucky enough again to have Mrs McCordick to come and teach us our Music and Art. We love these afternoons!

Thursday and Friday – Miss Cragg

Thursday saw some of us completing the spelling aspect of the SATs, we took our time and had a really good go. That’s all we’re asking for! As long as you have tried your best Year 2, you will make all of your grown-ups very happy. In the afternoon we were treating to a drumming session instead of French, it could be heard all over school and we loved it! We also worked hard in PE and ICT with our Junior Jam teachers too.

On Friday we were ordering lengths in Maths, we have done some really careful measuring with cm and m these last couple of weeks using our rulers and metre sticks (and the trundle wheel!). In English we began to learn about adverbial phrases, using them in our writing as sentence openers to describe the setting in our story, ‘Tadpole’s Promise’. In RE we continued with our learning about Judaism, this week finding out about the Sabbath which Jews celebrate every week during Shabbat. We are beginning to make comparisons with other religions we have been learning about and sharing the similarities and differences.

W.C 25.04.22 - Monday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

This week in Maths, we have continued learning all about shape particularly, counting vertices on 3D shapes, sorting 3D shapes and finally making patterns with 3D shapes. We have worked really hard to understand both 2D and 3D shapes and are now ready for a new challenge - measure!

In English this week, we planned our own rhyming Owl and the Pussycat poem, we then wrote our own poem and even edited it! This was the trickiest big write we have had to do yet, but oh my, Year 2 smashed it! They really impressed us adults in Year 2 with some fantastic rhyming going on and making sure they didn't write a story. Good job Year 2!

We also started our new History topic 'Queens in the UK and England'. We looked at a timeline and who ruled when- we noticed there were a lot more men rulers than women! We can't wait to find out more about the queens and how they have impacted our world and lives today.

On Wednesday afternoon, we had Mrs McCordick with us. We did some Music and Art, we had lots of fun singing as Mrs McCordick played the piano!

Thursday and Friday – Miss Cragg

In Thursdays Maths we started a new topic – measurement. We’ve been learning about centimetres, measuring objects, drawing lines and how to use our rulers correctly. In English it was all about our handwriting, making sure our ascenders and descenders reach the red lines, that our other letters sit inside the grey lines and that are capital letters are correct. In one lesson we’ve made huge progress! Lets hope it continues when we copy out our own versions of the poem ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’ that we have been writing and editing this week and last so that we can have neat copies we can be really proud of.

During Fridays Maths lesson we were learning about metres, what we could measure with this unit, how to use a metre stick correctly and choosing the correct unit of measurement for two items. We measured the classroom, the hall and the playground using a trundle wheel. In case you ever wondered...you can't fit a double decker bus in the classroom! In English we used our new found beautiful handwriting style to copy out a neat version of our poems, concentrating hard on our ascenders and descenders as well as ensuring we sat our letters inside the lines. We had time for an RE lesson too, our first on a new religion – Judaism. We began to learn about how and where Jewish people pray and looked at some religious artefacts including a kippah, tallit and the Torah. We also started to use some new vocabulary such as synagogue, tzitzit, Sabbeth and Shabbat.

Have a great weekend!

WC: 20.04.22 - Wednesday- Mrs Barratt

Welcome back Year 2, we hope you have had a well-rested Easter break and not eaten too much chocolate!

We started back with Maths, continuing shape, we learnt about patterns and following patterns with 2D shapes.

In English, we were looking at the past progressive tense and using this to write our own sentences answering questions for the Owl and the Pussycat.

P.E is still on a Wednesday and Thursday in Year this term.

Thursday and Friday - Miss Cragg

We worked off our Easter excess by learning to identify the faces on 3D shapes, we know them by their 2D shape names. On Friday we counted edges on 3D shapes.

In English we looked at prefixes, focusing on the prefix 'un' and thinking of words which are changed by adding this prefix. On Friday we learned about synonyms, using a different word which has the same meaning to make our writing more exciting.

We had so much fun celebrating Songkran Water Festival! We learned all about the festival from Thailand in a very special assembly and then we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves using water balloons and water pistols to soak all of the teachers on the field! Make sure you check out the gallery page to see all of the photographs of us.
