This week in English the children have planned their independent writing sequence and have completed their independent writing around the coral reef habitat. They explored the coral reef and the creatures that live there, before gathering facts to write their non chronological report about the habitat.

 This week in English the children have enjoiyed experiences days exploring badgers and hedgehogs. We learned about their habitats and diests and explored how their habitats met their needs. We then used some drama to try to sell a woodland habitat to a badger, highlighting all of it’s positive feature. The children then wrote sentences using the conjunctions if and because to explain why the woodland is an ideal habitat.

In maths this week, the first group of children have been working on multiplying by three with lots of rehearsal of their times tables. The second group have continued their place value within 20 learning.

This week in English the children have written sentences to describe the British woodlands before using the conjunction when to describe how the falling leaves make an ideal habitat for insects and worms. The children then used superlatives to describe the woodland animals.

 

In maths, the first group have continued their multiplication and division learning. They have explored division by sharing and grouping. The second group of children have progressed on to place value within 20. They have explored how ten is made up on ten ones before beginning to investigate greater numbers.

This week in English the children have written sentences using precise adjectives to describe a variety of different habitats, including cold, tall mountains and vibrant oceans. They then used precise verbs and adjectives to describe the animals that live there such as slithering green pythons and swooping and gliding eagles. The children then created a question for the reader, enticing them to visit the habitat.

In maths this week, one group of children have moved onto their multiplication and division learning. They have explored arrays and multiples of 2, 5 and 10. The second group of children have continued their learning around shape, exploring 2d shapes, 3d shapes and sorting them.

This week in English the children have begun to write sentences for their non-chronological report about habitats. They wrote sentences with bizarre ideas – “Would you see a cat getting chicken at KFC or a black panther pushing a trolley in Tesco?” before describing why animals live in a habitat. As a class the children built a class definition of a habitat – A habitat is the natural environment of an animal that provides everything it needs to survive, including food, water, air and shelter.

In maths one group of children have moved on to learning about shape. They have explored 2d and 3d shapes, sorted them by their properties and identified them by name. The second group of mathematicians have begun their multiplication learning. They have explored arrays and have written multiplication and repeated addition sentences to demonstrate their understanding.

Welcome back from a lovely half term Everest team! Whilst it was lovely to have some time off, the children have all come back to school ready to learn and I am very proud of them. We have been fortunate to welcome Ms Rowlands to our class this term. She will be supporting the children with their learning each morning and has already been a huge help to our learning!

 

In English this week we have begun our new text, “What’s where on Earth”. This nonfiction text give us lots of information about animals and the world around us. We will be writing a non-chronological report about animals and their habitats. This week we have identified the features of a non-chronological report and have begun to assemble our model text. We have completed lots of learning about habitats and the things that animals and humans need to survive.

In maths, we continue to work in two groups. Our focus this week has been addition and subtraction. All of the children have made good progress with their learning. The first group have been completing addition and subtraction using exchanges, using base ten equipment and place value counters to scaffold their learning. The second group have been completing addition and subtraction within ten and identifying fact families.

In English this week we have been busy planning and writing out Independent writing piece. This is based on the final plot point of the Building Boy story, where Tom rebuilds the house that Grandma began to build. The children have worked incredibly hard to include features in their story, including subordinating conjunctions, possessive apostrophes and precise adverbs. The writing is looking fantastic and I am looking forward to supporting the children to complete their editing and publishing next week.

In Maths we continue with our addition and subtraction learning. The first group  of children have been adding numbers together and also finding parts and wholes of numbers. The children have been using part whole models and counters to support their learning. The second group of children have been working hard at adding numberd without exchanging, before then adding ones across a ten and tens across a hundred. We have been using the base ten equipment to secure the children’s understanding of exchange.

We have continued our writing around our story, The Building Boy, this week. We have written sentences using appropriate adjectives to describe the fish swimming around Tom and Grandma and precise verbs to describe their movements. The children then wrote sentences using superlatives to describe the city skyline with “the big, bigger, biggest skyscrapers.” The children are really enjoying this story and they have produced some beautiful writing.

In maths this week, both groups have moved onto addition and subtraction. The first group have been using manipulatives to support them to add and subtract 1s, then 10s and then 100s.  The second group have been working hard to identify parts and wholes. They have been partitioning objects into different groups and recognising the parts and the wholes before having a go at writing number sentences.

This week in English we have continued to write sentences around our story, The Building Boy. In our story, our main character Tom has worked through the seasons to build something incredible. His Grandma! This week the children have written sentences including commands - “Open your eyes!” and questions – “Did you miss me?”. We then enjoyed an experience day, investigating underwater creatures to gather adjectives and verbs for our writing next week!

 

In maths, both groups have continued their place value learning. The first group have been comparing and ordering numbers within 1,000 before counting in 50s. The second group have been comparing and ordering numbers within ten, and practising using number lines to support their understanding of number.

This week in English we have continued to write sentences around our story, The Building Boy. The children have been writing sentences that include similes, precise verbs and exclamations with great success. We enjoyed an experience day, where we watched some classic “magical moments” on screen, and discussed how we knew that something amazing and mysterious was about to happen.

In maths, both groups have continued their place value learning. The first group have been recognising and representing hundreds, tens and ones in three digit numbers before partitioning these. The children had great success with flexible partitioning, which shows a huge leap in their understanding of number! The second group have been counting on from any number using number tracks and manipulatives to support their understanding. They have also practiced counting backwards within ten and finding one more and one less.

It has been lovely to welcome the children back to the Everest room this week! We have very quickly settled back into our routines and everybody has been working exceptionally hard.

In English we are writing sentences around the book “The Building Boy” by Ross Montgomery. This beautifully illustrated story explores the relationship between a young boy, “Tom”, and his Grandmother. This week the children have written sentences using fronted adverbials, repetition, superlatives, alliteration and speech. Impressive work! The children also enjoyed an experience day, during which they learned about being an architect and designed their own buildings.

 

In Maths, we continue to work in two groups. All of the children are currently learning about place value. The first group have been exploring numbers within 1,000. This week they have reviewed their understanding of place value within 100 and practiced partitioning and representing these numbers, before moving on to representing numbers within a thousand. The second group have been learning about place value within 10. They have spent time sorting and representing objects using a variety of manipulatives, before counting objects and writing numbers as words.
