Autumn Term 2026
Week commencing 28th September 2026
This week in English the children have became readers of a non-chronological report. We used the model text All About Dogs to find information quickly by using sub-headings, pictures and useful vocabulary. The children answered questions about what a reader might want to know and explained how the feature of the report help the reader find and understand information. The children then became authors and explored the choices an author makes when creating a non-chronological report. They used the model text to identify the four writing ingredients we need: a clear title, helpful subheadings, factual information and useful pictures. The children thought about their reader and discussed why each writing ingredient is important., how it helps the reader find and understand information and how writers make careful choices to help their audience.
In maths the children explored fact families. They recognised that the numbers in a fact family do not change and that we can build addition and subtraction sentences using these numbers to create accurate number sentences. The children spent time practising identifying all of the calculations in each fact family accurately. They then spent time exploring number bonds to ten and worked on building accuracy and fluency in identifying these.
Week commencing 21st September 2026
This week in English the children have identified facts and opinions and sorted these. The children have written sentences describing dogs, their characteristics and features and the things that they need.
In maths the children have been comparing and ordering numbers and counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.
Week commencig 14th September 2026
This week the children have continued to learn about dogs for our non-chronological report. They have written sentences to describe the things a dog can do and they have gathered some facts about dogs to begin to develop a word bank to use in their writing.
In maths the children have continued their place value learning. They have practiced using a place value chart and partitioning numbers into tens and ones. They have also spent time exploring number lines to 100, and using the vocabulary greater than and less than.
Week commencing 7th September 2026
It has been lovely to welcome the children back to the Everest room and we have moved straight back into our learning this week. In English we will be writing a non -chronological report about dogs and we are using “The Detective Dog” by Julia Donaldson as inspiration for our writing. The children enjoyed listening to the story and exploring how dogs have a “keen sense of smell.” The children wrote sentences about the things that Nell discovered and began to gather facts about dogs that they can later use in their reports. Fortunately, many of our children are very knowledgeable about dogs!
In maths we have begun our place value learning. The children have taken part in some practical learning, representing numbers with manipulatives and using part whole models to identify the tens and ones.
