This week in English, the children have been busy planning their independent writing, a poem entitled “If I were in charge of the school.” They have really enjoyed imagining the rules they would put into place for our school and I am looking forward to reading their final published pieces of writing.

In Maths, the first group of mathematicians have been finding fractions on a number line and fractions of a bar model. Some of the children are now recognising equivalent fractions independently, and are able to make their own equivalent fractions. We have used lots of resources to support the children’s understanding of fractions and their confidence is growing beautifully. Well done Team!

The second group of mathematicians have completed their mass and volume learning and are now exploring multiplication and division. They have had great success with counting in 2s, 10s and 5s and they enjoyed creating a huge counting in 2s number line outdoors to support their learning. Great work!

Week commencing 2nd March 2026

In English this week, the children have begun to write their sentences for their poem beginning with things that they would cancel. These lessons have been really fun and the children have enjoyed coming up with lists of things they would rid the world of, including mushrooms, sprouts and motion sickness! They then wrote imaginative sentences about things they would love to see in the world, including pens made of candy canes and tables made of chicken tenders.

In Maths, one group of children have continued their fractions learning. They have learned about unit fractions and non unit fractions and have begun to compare fractions with different denominators. We spent a day exploring this practically with fraction strips and fraction wheels.

The second group of children continued their mass and capacity learning, measuring and comparing mass and beginning to explore volume.

It has been lovely to welcome the children back after half term. We have jumped straight back in to working hard this week. In English we have begun our new poetry unit based on the poem “If I were in charge of the world” by Judith Viorst. We have explored the shape of the poem and found that each stanza has a different purpose. We then explored the qualities that world leaders should have and advertised for our own new world leader.

In maths this week, one group of children completed their learning about length and measure and have now moved onto exploring fractions. They have learned what a unit fraction is and are now beginning to compare unit fractions. The second group of children also completed their length learning and have moved onto mass and volume. They have explored the concept of heavier and lighter using scales and have measured the mass of objects using cubes.

In addition this they have used onomatopoeia to describe the sounds the Itty Bitty made when it was lured from the roof and landed in the bin!

In maths this week, one group of children have worked hard to understand related facts and number families. This has been tricky and they have used lots of resources to secure their understanding. Great work team!

The second group have been working on their multiplication and division unit with a focus on linking multiplication and division facts. The children have used base ten and place value charts, with lots of white board work and practice, to help them to secure this skill. Super mathematicians.

Week commencing 19th January 2026

This week in English the children have describe Eddie’s visit to the antique shop using precise adjectives and similes. We had an experience day where we explored the sights of the high street, the shops and the people who we would meet there. We explored Eddie’s emotions as she failed to find her fluffy squishy itty bitty.

In maths this week, one group of children have continued with their addition and subtraction learning. This week the focus has been on subtraction, and the children have used a variety of strategies including subtraction using number bonds, counting back and finding the difference. We have used number lines and manipulatives to support their understanding.

The second group have continued their multiplication and division learning, focussing on related calculations, reasoning about multiplication and beginning to multiply a two digit number by a one digit number. The children have spent several days building confidence in multiplying by using place value charts and base ten to support their understanding. Well done team!

Week commencing 12th January 2026

In maths this week, one group have been working on addition and subtraction within 20, finding number bonds and doubles. The children used lots of resources to help them to represent number bonds visually. Doubles were tricky for some children, however they achieved the learning with additional practice. We then learned about near doubles and subtracted using number bonds.

This week in English, we have started our new story, The Marvellous Fluffy Squishy Itty Bitty. We began our week with an experience lesson when we made chocolate crispy cakes and a card for someone that we love. We wrote sentences using superlatives and questions. We then ended the week with another experience day where we explored (and tasted) the sweet treats that can be found in a bakery.

In maths this week, the first group has continued with their multiplication and division learning. This week they have been focussing on the three and four times tables and are becoming increasingly confident in finding the multiplication and division fact families. The second group completed their place value within twenty learning and have moved on to addition and subtraction within 20.
