Autumn Term 2025

P.E Days - Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Could all children please have a pair of wellies with them in school to access the outdoor provision.

14.11.2025

In literacy, we have been reading Room on the Broom. We have been focusing on the title of the book and what an author and illustrator are. We have changed our voices to be each of the characters and have discussed the problem within the story (the dragon wanted to eat the witch, and the broom snapped in two because it was too heavy!). The children have used their fine motor skills to cut out the characters and stick them onto the broomstick in the order that they appear in the story.

In maths, we have been looking at circles and triangles. We have been learning about their properties and focusing on specific vocabulary to describe the shapes. The children have been on a shape hunt inside and outside to find triangles and circles, discussing how they know it is a triangle or a circle based on the properties. We have looked at Kandinsky’s artwork and used circles and triangles to make pictures. We have also looked at positional language, describing where the puppy was (next to, on top of, under, behind, in between). The children then had a go at moving the puppy based on instructions from another child.

We have been learning about Remembrance Day, creating poppies and talking about the brave soldiers.

During Our World time, we have been learning about autumn. We have discussed what we see during autumn. Miss Allen brought in some items from an autumn scavenger hunt for the children to explore, such as red, yellow and orange leaves, conkers, pine cones, and autumn animals. Later on this term, we will be learning about autumn animals and hibernation.

We have started to learn our Nativity songs! This term, we are going to be very busy preparing our Nativity show for you, and we are so excited!

In provision, the children have enjoyed using the building blocks, communicating and problem-solving with each other to construct. The children have also enjoyed using the Lego to build. This has been great for continuing to develop our oracy and positional language skills.

Love of Reading books were changed this week for those who brought their folders back in. We have loved sharing our photos on Tapestry, we have not shared them all yet; we will be going through them at the end of the day after story time. I have a few Passports to tick off! It is amazing to see the things the children are doing outside of school.

Keep practising phonics sounds, letter formations and name writing; we have really seen a huge amount of progress.

What a fun-filled week we have had!

We started the week with Mini First Aid training, learning what to do if someone falls over, how to use an ice pack, apply plasters, and what number to call in an emergency! The children were superstar first aiders — they remembered to ring '999' in an emergency, to stay on the phone, and to give important information (name and location).

Then, we had a visit from Sleaford Police! PCSO Jones told us all about the important jobs that the police do to keep us safe, reminding us about the importance of knowing our full names and addresses in case of an emergency.

Following on from our first aid and police visit, we have been using our doctor’s kit in provision and making police cars, linking to our maths through repeating patterns.

This week, there have been no new phonics sounds. We have been revisiting the sounds we have already learned and using these in our literacy. Reading Can't You Sleep, Little Bear?, the children used their phonics knowledge to write the initial sounds, segmenting and writing the word bed.

In maths, we have been embedding our mathematical knowledge, using vocabulary that we have learned throughout the term. The children have been deepening their thinking and explaining how they know something. They have been counting carefully and identifying numbers 1–10 while placing pegs onto the hedgehogs.

Investigating and exploring, the children enjoyed flying paper airplanes and predicting whose would fly the furthest.

10.10.2025

This week we have been learning about real life superheroes, we had a visit from the Fire station! The children were able to see what firefighters had to wear, what they had to do (stop, drop, roll), they even got to sit on the fire engine and spray their hose! We have used 2D shapes to craft our own fire engines, discussing what we remember from our special visit.

In maths, we have been continuing our development of 1,2,3. We have been subitising (identifying the amount quickly, without having to count), representing 1,2,3 - the children used their gross motor skills to throw the bean bags onto the numbers, to represent the amount. We have been looking at 1 more and 1 less, and how we can make 1,2,3. We have learned that 3 is made up of 1 and 2, 2 and 1, 1 and 1 and 1, and 3 and 0.

In literacy, we have been reading 'Ruby's Worry' and have discussed the importance of talking about how we are feeling and if we have a worry. We have introduced drawing and narrating our own stories, using once upon a time, unfortunately, luckily and finally.

We have been developing our writing, using paintbrushes to write the letters on the tuff tray. We have been doing lots of name writing - we have seen such huge progress in name writing! Please continue this at home!

We have been busy developing our fine motor skills, threading the beads onto the pipe cleaners to make bracelets - we challenged ourselves to see if we could make a repeated pattern!

As part of our PSED, we have played 'Mr bear', the children took it in turns to be the bear and someone had to steal the honey! The bear had to work out who stole the honey!

As the weather is getting colder, please ensure that children have suitable clothing (jumper/cardigan, coat, and wellies) for outdoor provision.

How has it been 5 weeks already?!

This week in maths, we have been looking at repeating patterns, and creating our own repeating patterns. We have had fun making our own patterns and figuring out what comes next. We have started to move onto finding 1,2,3 and subitising 1,2,3.

In literacy this week, we have continued to read 'Owl Babies', using our phonics knowledge to write the initial sounds for the characters names. We have unpicked the story, discussed the vocabulary 'hunted, silent, swooped, fuss, bounced and flapped' and their definitions - please use these as much as you can to develop your child's oracy and vocabulary.

During phonics, we have used the magnetic boards to identify the sounds and build simple words. Keep practicing phonics at home! We have seen huge progress in such a short amount of time! Our sounds this week are 'e, l, h, r, j'.

We have continued to develop our fine motor skills and maths learning from the previous weeks, using the tweezers to pick up the pompoms and match them to the picture. Still strengthening our muscles, the children have enjoyed chopping vegetables in the mud kitchen, we have chopped broccoli, celery and carrots.

In our world time, We have looked at pictures of St Deny's Church, and we have started to learn about Jesus, and why he is special to Christians.

We have been extremely busy this week!

Throughout maths we have been sorting and identifying sets. The children have thought carefully about the groups that they would like to sort the objects into based on their characteristics (colour, size, animals, vehicles, etc). We have played memory matching games.

We had our first P.E lesson with Mr Godson, the children were superstars at getting changed independently, building on their resilience to keep trying!

The children have been busy developing their fine motor skills, cutting along the zig-zag lines to make a crown and decorating it using a variety of resources. We have had many Kings and Queens in our classroom this week! The children have been threading laces through 2D shapes, and using the stencils, hole punchers and chalk in the writing area!

The children have enjoyed using the doctors kits to be Vets and looking after the animals. Some children have used the cubes and have pretended to be at the salon getting their nails done!

In PSHE this week, we have been discussing who is special to us, our memories, ourselves and our families. The children have drawn their families and have enjoyed telling each other about the things they do with their families. Using the mirrors, the children have painted their portraits!

Outside, the children have been using the woodwork resources. Using the screwdrivers to unscrew and screw the nails and wheels into the wood. We have talked about safety and how we can keep ourselves and each other safe whilst using the tools!

12.09.2025

Our first full week!

We have started phonics this week, 'm,a,s,d,t' are the sounds we have been learning and writing. We have been using our name cards to practice writing our names, and identifying the letters 'm,a,s,d,t'. We have continued working on our fine motor skills, using tweezers to pick up pompoms and using fine paint brushes to paint pictures.

Our classroom motto 'Teamwork makes the dream work' the children worked together, supporting and communicating with each other beautifully, whilst completing puzzles. We have been sorting, naming and matching 2D shapes based on their properties and have used the 3D shapes to create buildings.

In the story corner, some of the children have used the puppets re-enact the story 'The three little pigs', 'I'll huff, and I'll puff and I'll blow your house down', taking it in turns to be the big bad wolf.

Throughout PSHE this week, we have been focusing on our listening and attention, we have continued to share our family photos telling each other what we have been up to over the summer and where we have travelled to. We have read The Colour Monster, discussing emotions and how we can support each other.

Outside, we have been using the crates to build a long train to go on multiple journeys to the beach, Lego land, to go swimming and to go to the park. We have been digging for treasure in the mud.
