Summer Term 2026
P.E days
Wednesday with Mrs Wardell
Thursday with Miss Sewards
Summer 2 - Week 3 and 4
In the construction area, the children have been building together with a shared purpose, developing their communication and teamwork skills as they create different structures. Junk modelling has been particularly popular and engaging.
In role play, the children have been using puppets to act out and invent their own stories, supporting their imagination, language development, and confidence in storytelling.
During PE, the children have been practising for Sports Day. They have enjoyed taking part in running races and sack races, developing their coordination, stamina, and teamwork.
In the mud kitchen, the children have been using apples collected from the trees to create imaginative recipes. They have also been practising chopping skills, supporting their fine motor development.
In maths, the children have been building scenes and using positional language to describe what they can see and where objects are located. They have been recreating scenes and talking about different viewpoints, noticing that some people can see certain characters or objects while others cannot. This has helped them understand that things can look different depending on perspective. The children have also been giving and following instructions with a partner, developing their communication and spatial awareness skills.
In literacy, the children have been focusing on Where the Wild Things Are. They explored Max’s story, including his mischief, being sent to bed without supper, and his imaginative journey to a forest and sea where he becomes king of the Wild Things. The children have written sentences to describe Max’s actions and the Wild Things.
Summer 2 - Week 1 and 2
The children explored teen numbers, learning that they are made up of 10 and some more. They practised counting beyond 20 and ordering numbers from 1–20. This week, our focus has been on sharing and grouping. The children have shown great understanding when sharing amounts equally and can identify when groups are not equal. We will continue developing our understanding of grouping by identifying how many groups there are and how many objects are in each group.
Using the story Billy and the Beast, the children described the beast using exciting vocabulary. During continuous provision, they designed their own beasts and wrote descriptive words and sentences about them. The children have also been learning instructional writing by creating step-by-step instructions for planting a flower.
In P.E the children have started practicing for sports day!
The children have enjoyed junk modelling, using resources such as scissors, tape and recycled materials to build and construct with a purpose in mind. So far, they have created robots, boats and cars—we wonder what they will make next!
Our learning has focused on London. The children have explored famous landmarks, discussed why London is important, and learned about the King. They have also investigated different types of transport, including land, sea and air travel, and considered which would be the best way to travel from Sleaford to London.
The children have been learning about their bodies, using their phonics knowledge to read and match body part labels to a body map. This week, we revisited healthy and unhealthy foods. We discussed how some foods help to keep our bodies healthy and strong, while also recognising that it is okay to enjoy treats in moderation as part of a balanced diet.
W/C 04.05.2026 and 11.05.2026
We have had a super busy and exciting two weeks in Reception!
We enjoyed a fantastic trip to Inkpot Farm, where we learned all about the important jobs Farmer Hannah does each day. The children loved finding out about shearing sheep to make wool, caring for the sheep and their baby lambs, and collecting eggs from the chickens to sell. When we returned to school, we made special thank you cards for Hannah, which we will be posting very soon!
In Literacy, we have been reading the story Supertato. The children have thoroughly enjoyed this book, and it has definitely become one of our favourites this year! They wrote some fantastic sentences about the Evil Pea, including “He is mean and green,” and also thought carefully about how to describe Supertato.
In Maths, we have been learning how to add by counting on from a number rather than starting from 1. We have also been practising subtraction by finding out how many are left from an amount. Alongside this, we have explored 2D shapes by identifying shapes in the environment, composing and decomposing shapes, and rotating them. The children gave excellent instructions to help create tangram pictures and used brilliant mathematical vocabulary throughout.
During Our World time, we have had some very exciting arrivals, baby chicks! We named our chicks and eagerly waited for them to hatch. One very special moment was watching a chick hatch from its egg, which was an amazing experience for the children. They have loved observing how the chicks change and grow stronger each day before being moved into their larger cage.
This term, we have also been learning all about bees. Some children created their own informative posters using facts they had learned, and they used their phonics knowledge to label the flowers independently.

We hope you all had a lovely break! The children have returned refreshed, enthusiastic, and full of wonderful ideas.
This week we explored the story Billy's Bucket. Billy imagined all sorts of amazing things inside his bucket, sea creatures, submarines, and even mermaids!
The children shared their own imaginative ideas about what they would like in their buckets and then wrote sentences such as “I can see a…”. We were very impressed with their phonics and writing.
In maths, we have been consolidating number bonds to 5 and 10, different arrangements to make 10, understanding pairs (learning that a pair means two, even if they don’t match—like socks or gloves)
Next week, we will begin adding and taking away within 10.
We have been learning all about insects and how to identify them. Insects have 6 legs. Did you know that they have 3 body parts. We also explored Ramadan, learning about its importance and how it is celebrated.
We have repotted our broad beans, we can't believe how much they have grown! Wonder what we will grow next...
We had so much fun celebrating Holi, the festival of colour! It was a joyful way to welcome Spring and learn about different cultural traditions.
Information about our upcoming trip will be with you next week :)
