WC 12th December 2022

In Maths, we have started to count up to 20. We have been writing numbers and words to 20 . We have also been using our tens frames and counters and also base ten to start to count using tens and ones. Super work!

In English, we have continued to think about our accurate letter formation for our handwriting. We have also been thinking carefully about how we use finger spaces in our writing and writing  extended sentences using a coordinating conjunction. In our story, we were surprised to find ‘Boring man’ saved the day but everyone thought it was very funny that he sent the baddies to sleep!

The next set of spellings will be: home, those, woke, hope, hole, mole, spoke, joke, bone, phone.
These need to be rehearsed ready for the New year. Our spelling test will be on Monday 9th January.

Design and technology has been a big focus this week and we have been busy designing our own Christmas wreath. We researched different wreaths, made our own design and then assembled this using lots of different festive materials (including bells, ribbons and seasonal colours). We reflected on our work and each other’s work.

We had a surprise visit from Father Christmas on Friday afternoon which was very exciting. The seasonal weather is  also adding to the magic!

Everyone has worked really hard and shown real resilience in our learning and we are all looking forward to some treats next week...

Remember it’s our Superhero day on Monday 19th December; we will be doing superhero games in the hall and other fun activities including drawing some super hero cartoons, decorating web biscuits and making what we hope will be an incredible, sparkly mask! Everyone is welcome to dress up as their own hero! I know I will need to get busy and assemble my special cape!

Wednesday 21st December is our whole school panto trip. Oh no it isn’t.... oh yes it is!

WC 5th December 2022

In Maths, we have had fun exploring 3D and 2D shapes this week. We have identified and named them using all their tricky name spellings! We have also been thinking carefully about the differences between the shapes.

In English, we have been unscrambling sentences to make sure the words are in the correct order and checking that the sentence makes sense. We have been thinking about what the word Superhero means and Superhero attributes. We have been writing about which Superhero could help us get rid of the baddies and what special powers they may need! We decided ropes, nets, boots, capes, torches and special glasses (to help our heroes see) would all be necessary accessories! What experts the children are!

We are enjoying our new story so much it has influenced our Christmas party theme! Please dress as a Superhero of your choice on Monday 19th December for our year 1 Christmas party activities! All kind, incredible heroes are welcome! :)

The next set of spellings will be:five, ride, like, time, side, slide, spike, trike, fire, mine.

In Art this week things have become very festive! Our little classroom tree is now adorned with beautiful handmade decorations and does look rather special! Perhaps the loveliest, little tree in the world?

In Science, we have observed the change of season from Autumn to Winter. We have thought about all the features of winter, how we wear lots of warm clothing, have less day light to play outside and how animals have to adapt in the colder weather. Everyone was fascinated by the fact snakes also hibernate (or partially sleep). In History, we have been learning about St George’s day and what is fact and what is myth. In Geography, we described our own town and thought about where we live in relation to our local human and physical features.

Remember you can wear a Christmas jumper on Tuesday and it is Christmas lunch!

WC 28th November 2022

In Maths, we have been working on our subtraction methods and this week we have used the number line to count back. We have also found the difference between the number of different objects.

In English, we have started reading our new text Send for the Super Hero by Michael Rosen. We have been studying the evil baddies in the story and describing them using super adjectives. We have been working hard on our careful letter formation to write some of these. We have also been writing dictated sentences using our adjectives. We are working hard to make sure we write accurately and check our work so we are really proud of it.

The next set of spellings will be:even, complete, delete,Chinese, these, evening, eve, athlete, extreme.

In Art this week we completed the octopuses and everyone was very focused on this vibrant under water sculpture!  In History, we thought about why we celebrate ‘Trooping the colour’ and there was some super marching! In RE, we had a lovely, welcoming visit to our local St Denys church and got to see all the different features of the church. Thank you! We found out lots of interesting historical knowledge and also enjoyed seeing the beautiful Christmas trees as part of the advent celebration. We were inspired to create some stained glass window art.

A super week Year 1! Thank you for your hard work.

WC 21st November 2022

In Maths, we have continued to find the addition sentences for different number bonds. Our mental Maths and use of the strategies is becoming more efficient. We have also found the missing part in addition number problems - we used the number line to count on to help us work out our answers. We finished the week with Miss Williams introducing subtraction and crossing out pictures of objects to see what was left. Good maths work Year 1.

In English, we used all our writing skills to write a title or sub heading, labels and facts about constellations. We explained how they are seen on a clear night and make lots of different patterns and shapes. Everyone did some good constellation drawings too. We finished our space learning by thinking about the glossary in non fiction texts. Everyone worked really well to read key words and their definitions and then try and order them alphabetically. Tricky work! We needed to remind ourselves of our alphabet song which certainly helped!

On Friday, we found out that two baddies are on the loose and may be in our local area - they are known as 'Filth' and 'Vacuum'. We enthusiastically shared our ideas about what these baddies may do! The children were very concerned that they may squirt slime on up, suck us up, steal all the toys or even break our houses! We are now on the search for them and any superheroes who may be able to help us catch them! Keep a look out over the weekend!!

The next set of spellings will be: made, take, came, mistake, same, safe, awake, snowflake, rake, plate.

In Science, we are now learning all about the seasons. We have been thinking about the features of Autumn, what we do in Autumn and how the weather and our environment is changing as we move towards Winter. In Art, we produced some super 3D paper sculpture with Mrs Freeman - impressive work. We also started working on a collaborative paper sculpture using decorated paper cups and recycled paper - watch this space as we work to assemble it as a class.

Next Friday (2nd December) as part of our RE Christianity learning KS1 will be taking a little walk to visit our local St Denys Church along with Miss Cragg and Year 2.

WC 14th November 2022

This week has been a busy assessment week across the whole school. In Year 1, our children have tried more formal tests in maths, reading and science. They have focused very well and we are very proud of them stepping up to this new challenge. Well-done for all your hard work.

In Maths, we have still managed to fit some addition lessons in! We have enjoyed systematically counting number bonds, counting number bonds to 10 and started to compare addition sentences using our number bond knowledge. Wow! Try the 'hit the button' game at home with the number bonds to 10. See if you can find the missing number bond even faster!

In English, we have used our non-fiction research to write our own fact file page about the Planet Mars. For example we found out Mars is known as the red planet, Earth is much bigger than Mars and that there are no humans (or Martians!) living there. We have started planning to write about constellations next and we finished the week having some fun making our own constellation with mini marshmallows and cocktail sticks! They really did look like the 'little bear' or the 'lion'!The children also created their own new constellation shape. We are getting better at researching facts too!

Remember we now change phonics books twice a week alongside our regular home reading book - so keep reading! Every read gets counted in our reading book vending machine competition - the more reads you do the more chance of winning!

The next set of spellings will be:day, play, cowboy, enjoy, stay, toy, joy, clay, say, way. Everone did really well this week so keep rehearsing your spellings because your hardwork is helping you to succeed!

We have continued with our RE learning about Christianity, we learnt about churches and how they come in all shapes and sizes. We also thought about the features they have inside and outside and how they create a sense of belonging for Christians. In PHSE, we have thought about our similarities and differences. Children worked with their partner to find out what they had in common or what they may like that’s different.

Not forgetting that we had our amazing dance session with Robin Windsor and Miss Cheryl on Tuesday! Ask your child to show you the dance moves we learnt!

WC 7th November 2022.

Welcome back after halfterm :)

In Maths, we introduced the addition sign this week.We added numbers using our part whole model to help us. We have also been learning how to create a fact family and tried this using bar models.

In English, we have predicted where the little girl in our story may be going when she sets off to the air base and we have written some super questions. We have thought carefully about homophones, identifying them and writing our own sentences including them! A busy week of writing! We have also been researching non fiction texts about space and we have been finding out facts about planet Mars.

We will now change phonics books twice a week alongside our regular home reading book. The next set of spellings will be:rain, point, oil, wait, train, coin, join, paid, afraid, soil.

We have continued with our History learning, this week we learnt about why we have Remembrance Day and did a great job interviewing each other about it. We also made our own lovely poppy using diffferent materials. In Geography, we continued to think about where we live and created our own map of our local walk in our town. In PE, we have been moving to music in dance (marching) and continuing with game skills - throwing and catching a tennis ball. In Art, this weeks focus was collage which everyone really enjoyed.

It is great to be back, refreshed and ready for a busy Christmas term.

WC 17th October 2022.

In Maths, we have continued to rehearse our ordinal numbers, explored number lines and thought carefully about how to answer questions using them. We have also started to think about addition through the use of part whole models. Everyone did an excellent job. Remember to keep counting objects when you are out and about; you could also try writing your own number line.

In English, we have written some great adjectives to describe different planets and the stars. We have learnt all about bossy commands. We did a great job writing some commands to help instruct the little girl in our story on how she could train to be an astronaut. We went on our own imaginary space adventure; landing on different planets! You may want to find out some Space facts during the holiday?

You will have a new home reading book for the half term holiday, some phonics QR codes you can scan to rehearse your phonics sounds and new spellings in your homework/ reading record ready for when we return. The next set of spellings will be:pocket, football, balloon, playground, carrot, farmyard, thunder, bedroom, sunset, blackberry.

We have started our History learning this week, including some stories inspired by Black History month. We have also been learning about the historical figure; Guy Fawkes. We discovered why we have bonfire night and shared all our ideas by acting out the story and talking about the historical facts. We also created some lovely bonfire art using a mixture of natural materials and paint. In Music, we learnt about notation and had a go at making our own recycled percussion instrument to try out! This was good fun and everyone did a great job following the symbols using their instruments! In PSHE, we have been reflecting on our Year 1 class charter and had a lovely finish to the week by sharing what we are proud of in our learning and learning behaviour.

Everyone has worked really hard and should be so proud of how sensible they have been this first term starting in KS1. You have been super busy and super stars! Have a happy and safe holiday. See you on the 7th November refreshed and ready to learn. :)

WC 10th October 2022.

In Maths, we have been ordering numbers and learning about ordinal numbers. We have ordered objects outside using hoops and bean bags and answered lots of questions in our maths books. We have had to use our reading skills to help us and we are getting much braver at this.

In English, we have completed our learning about the Cave Baby by writing about the start of the story. We had a mysterious bag land in our outdoor area on Wednesday! We were intrigued by a strange, very loud noise outside - we thought it was a rocket! We discovered the bag belonged to the character in our new story ‘Astro- girl’ and it gave us lots of clues about the story. We made some super predictions and we have written our ideas. It also ignited our interest in space and we have been making space puppets and reading the names of all the planets. We read the start of our new book and had fun pretending to star gaze - we used some really wonderful adjectives to describe what we saw!

We are continuing to work hard in our daily phonics. Please continue to read both your phonics books and your shared home reading book. Please read, read and read some more! Remember we also need your home reading record and books in the blue class reading box each day so we can also read with you and change your books easily!  😊This weeks spellings will be:fresher, higher, unload, unhappy, hardest, unfair, quicker, darkest, undo and unlock. Remember to rehearse them at home.

In Geography, we had a sunny, autumnal walk to the River Slea to feed the ducks! We were very observant of our town and we have started to describe what we saw through some lovely posters including our local physical and human features. In Science, we discovered our nose is also really important alongside our tongue in how we taste! We had a close look at our own taste buds using mirrors and we also enjoyed investigating different flavours through taste. For example some children loved the sour taste others pulled some very funny faces trying it! In Music, we have continued to create rhythm using percussion instruments. A few children also had fun exploring and making their own band outside and were so noisy reception heard their tunes! In Art, we are now experimenting with shape and in RE, we are continuing to learn about Christianity. What a busy week you've had!

Enjoy your pumpkin carving this weekend!

WC 3rd October 2022.

Autumnal seasonal changes have given us lots of opportunities to add natural objects to our outdoor area.We have used leaves, beech husks and twigs for some fun writing, art work and counting this week! The children have found the whooshing, whistling wind exciting when they played outside! As it was National Poetry day this week we read the Poem titled 'The October Party' where hundreds of leaves came, Miss Weather led the dancing and Profesor Wind the band! It seemed very suitable for everyone playing outside surrounded by Autumn colours!

In Maths, we have started to compare numbers. We have been learning different ways to describe our answers in number sentences using the mathematical vocabulary greater than, less than and equal to. We have started to learn about inequality signs ( < , >, =) and how to use them. We found this tricky but by sticking at it, using different resources and taking a little more time we have now started recording the inequality signs to answer our questions.

In English, we have focused our thoughts on the deep, dark cave in our story. We did a great job writing some sentences about it. Some children also wrote sentences about the bear that we think lives inside! We also made some super clay caves with lots of our autumn foliage added! We have been learning about how to extend a sentence with the conjunction ‘and’ - impressive stamina year 1. We shared some great ideas about our brown bears! We are learning to say our ideas aloud to help us prepare to write them. Some children said 'The brown bear is nice and friendly' but others disagreed and said 'The brown bear is hairy and dirty!'

In Science, we have continued to learn about our different senses. We had fun investigating these through different experiments. These included relying just on touch to try to determine various objects and using just our sense of smell to identify different foods ( without peeking!) The children made some good guesses! In Art, we have continued experimenting with line. The children have drawn some beautiful, original pieces using pencil - including a fairy garden and a robot. Thank you Mrs Freeman. In Music, we tried out some rhythms by clapping. We were inspired by the production of ‘Stomp’. In PE, we have really improved our throwing and catching skills, aiming at different targets and we are contining to build our gymnastics skills with Mr Godson. :)

This weeks spellings will be: looking, looked, buzzing, buzzed, jumping, jumped, walking, walked, shouting, shouted.
Remember to rehearse them at home. The hard work pays off!

See you next week Year 1! On Tuesday we will be out and about on a little, local Geography walk so please make sure you bring a coat in with you. Thank you. :)

WC 26th September 2022

In Maths, we have been finding one more and one less than a number. The children have been brilliant at this and they have started to explain how they knew they were correct! They are also now a whizz at checking their digit formation. We’ll keep working on this 😊 We also had fun using dice inside and outside to consolidate our learning!

In English, we have been busy writing about the brown hare in our story and working on how to use our phonics sounds to help us with our spelling. We have also started to retell the story from our book ‘Cave Baby’ - everyone was very enthusiastic about this and joined in with the story. We have been sequencing pictures from our story book - you may spot this on one of our ‘story washing lines’ outside! We had a super finish to the week by learning all about sentences and how they need a ‘capital letter and a full stop’. We’ll try writing some sentences next week!

Thank you to our School Governor Mrs James who has been coming in each week to read with our children. Always have your home reading book and homework/reading record in school so we can read with you and check you are remembering to read at home. We are really getting into the swing of how to tackle our weekly spellings now too.  This weeks spellings will be: flowers, boxes, brushes, lunches, cars, beaches, dogs, dishes, clouds, peaches. Remember to rehearse them at home. Please ask if you have any queries.

In Computing, Mr Godson has shown everyone how to safely log in and the best part was everyone setting up their own avatar! They are great! In Music, we have been learning about pulse and tempo and it was lively dancing as the tempo got faster! We have decided we need to appeal to our school council for a school disco as everyone was very enthusiastic and had favourite songs!

Another busy week Year 1! Look forward to seeing you again on Monday.

WC 19th September 2022

Good job again Year 1 - we are starting to settle into routines now and take on some Year 1 challenges!

In Maths, we have continued to count within ten and have rehearsed counting forwards on number tracks. We have also cleverly been counting from different starting points other than one. We have also started counting backwards from ten and recorded our answers using digits, number words and pictures. We are getting really good at this! Try and count forwards and backwards from different numbers within ten when you are at home. Remember you can do this anywhere!

In English, we have painted pictures of cave animals and described what kind of animals they are using lots of different adjectives. We have been reading these and placing them into noun phrases. We finished the week writing some of our ideas.

We are working hard on our phonics and reading. We have also been using our phonics skills to rehearse and learn our spellings and try to write them. Next weeks spellings will be: catch, fetch, kitchen, switch, hutch, witch, ditch, patch, match, batch. You can find these in your homework/ reading record so you can rehearse them at home:)

In Science, we have been learning all about our senses; sight and sound. We have studied our own eyes in the mirror and learnt some of the parts aswell as how we use our eyes. We also had fun on a sound walk round our school grounds! In Geography, we have learnt about physical features and sorted labelled pictures into either human or physical groups. Some children identified that the play park can fit in both categories. In Art, we have used paint to make our own colour wheel. Next week we'll have a go independently at this! In RE, we have started learning about Christianity and the parts of the Bible.

Everyone also had a First Aid session and the children learnt important life skills. They were really sensible and listened and had a go very capably.

WC 12th September 2022

A great week together in Year 1 with lots of smiles as friends played together. The weather has been warm enough to use the water trays and be outside everyday :)

In Maths, we have started the term by counting within 10. We have worked hard to count objects and counters on our tens frames and been learning methods to count accurately using pictures. We have been recording our answers and checking our digit formation - we are working hard to keep rehearsing this. We found 5 and 8 especially tricky!

In English, we have continued to read our new story - ‘The Cave Baby’. We have loved discovering all the animals in the story and role playIng them. We have been big, brown bears, laughing hyenas, thudding mammoths and scary, stripy tigers! We have been using our writing skills to create some labels and captions for them. Children have also had lots of fun playng with our toy wild animals, building caves and homes for them. Great job!

We have started rehearsing our strategies for spellings and next week we will be working on these words: pink, bank, think, batch, sketch, skin. We have also been doing lots of reading and Mrs Hudson has been impressed with everyone’s enthusiasm and pleased to be regularly changing books with children. Keep reading! :)

In Science, we are learning about the parts of the body. We had fun drawing around our friends and labelling different body parts. We have also started to learn about our senses, we have started with sight. In Geography, we have started to learn about human features and used our knowledge of Sleaford to help us think of human features we knew - great local knowledge Year 1! In Art, we have mixed primary and secondary colours.

Enjoy a well deserved rest on Saturday with your family! Thankyou for another fabulous week.

WC 5th September 2022.

We have had a super week settling into Year 1. It has whizzed by! Thankyou for coming in so sensibly and ready for our new School Year. We have so much to look forward to!

We have already started our phonics learning and had great recall of our phonics sounds. Next week we will be using our phonemes to rehearse new spellings in class (puff, buzz, fizz, kiss, bell).

In Maths, we have been sorting objects into different groups.

In English, we have started to read our new book ‘The Cave Baby’ by Julia Donaldson. We had fun talking about the naughty things the cave baby did and writing our own ideas.

We have explored and played in our new classroom and outdoor area with our friends and we have been settling into our new routines. We have been busy in PE by testing our fitness levels out on the field which everyone enjoyed. Year 1 are called 'Castle Class' so we have been learning about Sleaford Castle and how there are only ruins of it left - we enjoyed designing and building our own castles based on what we had found out. We found out what ‘house’ we are in and we have already started to earn lots of ‘merits‘ for using lovely manners, being kind and working hard during week 1!

Any questions please ask 😊... We look forward to seeing you again next week.
