Autumn Term 2025

Autumn 1. Useful information- PE will be on Monday and Wednesday each week. Please have a PE kit in School.

Please read with your child a minimum of 3 times a week.

Your child will receive 2 phonics reading books every 3/4 days. These will be at a suitable phonics level for your child.

Your child will also receive a home reading book of their choice each week - this is to be shared with an adult as may have trickier words for your child to decode.

Autumn 1 focus will be on settling in to our new routines;  embedding our phonics learning and reading for fluency.

 WC 13th October 2025.

The term is flying by so quickly! This week we finished our writing about the beautiful 'Rainbow Fish'. We enjoyed discussing the importance of kindness and how the little fish became a good friend. We all agreed how important this is. We are still working hard to form all our letters neatly and be brave writers using interesting vocabulary. We are working hard to say our sentence before writing it and to remember our finger spaces in our sentences.

In Maths, we have been adding two parts and have written our own addition number sentences. We have started to write addition fact families. We are using cubes or counters to help us find all the different ways we can make a number.

We continue to be busy learning our phonics sounds and reading our phonics books. Keep reading at home and don’t forget to read those tricky ‘red’ words printed in your phonics books. (Your child will tell you about them as red we can't fred! Which means we can't sound out the whole world and need to just try and remember how to read it and the spelling of the word by practise). We are starting to write these 'red words' in our English lessons - super work.

At the start of the week, we enjoyed a mini First aid session in the hall - we were taught how to apply a plaster, what we can do if someone chokes and who to call in an emergency. We thought sensibly about how we would need to say our location. First aid certificates and booklets are in your childs home folder. In RE, we have continued to learn about Christianity and stories within the Bible - this week we learnt about Noah’s Ark. In History, we have learnt about the significant person - Guy Fawkes. We made some super firework paintings. We also had fun making Halloween art! We finished the week thinking about how we are all different in PSHE. Welldone for another great week Year 1.

WC 6th October 2025.

In English, we have enjoyed our story about the shimmery rainbow fish. We met the shark character in the story and enjoyed role playing this. We have shared our ideas and written some lovely sentences to describe what the fish did using different verbs - spinning, twirling, turning and swimming!

In Maths, we are now thinking about addition and subtraction - still working within the number ten. We started by exploring the composition of different numbers. Thinking about ways we can break the whole into different parts.

In RE, we have started to learn about Christianity and discussed our own ideas of special books. We looked at the Bible and thought about why this is special to Christians. In Art, we continued our shape pictures which were all unique. In Science, this week was all about the sense taste - this was lots of fun - especially the lemons! Which do you prefer sweet or sour?

Finally, we really enjoyed our turn at a school beat box session! We used our mouth, tongue and voice to make our own vocal percussion sounds. You may hear your child making their own sound pattern this weekend...which sounds can you create or inspire you? Have a go!

WC 29th September 2025.

This week we finished our Penguin story of Lost and Found; we were pleased to have a happy ending where the boy and the penguin became good friends. We wrote about the Penguin's feelings - he was glad and happy. We have now started reading the familiar story of  ‘The Rainbow Fish’ by Marcus Pfister. We have made our own beautiful, sparkly, shimmery fish and described them in our writing. Lovely work Year 1.

In Maths, we have continued to explore numbers within 10. We have compared and ordered numbers; building towers to help us. We have become confident to use inequality signs and use the language of greater than, less than and equal to. We have started to compare 3 numbers in order from least to greatest. We had to prove and explain how we knew we were correct - super job!

In Geography, we have looked at different symbols you can find on a map - we did really well at this. We enjoyed adding our own map symbols to our local map of Sleaford. We have continued building a short sequence in PE, using balance, spinning jumps and rolls. We have also continued with games - using underarm throws to a target. In Art, we have been looking at images using shape and started to create our own pictures. As Scientists, we continue to learn about the parts of our body and how we use our senses. This week we thought about how our brain sends signals to the brain when we smell different things! We finished our School week as Historians; hearing about the legend of St George and the Dragon. Everyone loved making puppets of this.

Well done to all those involved in the Dance Academy awards night. What a busy week it has been! Rest well over the weekend; enjoy all the October Autumn colours and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.

WC 22nd September 2025.

In English, we are reading a lovely new book all about a little lost penguin. We have called him Pip. We have described his feelings and also thought about how we can help him get home to the South Pole. We are continuing to try to say our writing ideas aloud and write carefully and neatly. Great job!

In Maths, we are using our tens frames and our number tracks to accurately make and find numbers. We have been comparing amounts using mathematical vocabulary more than and fewer than.

In Art, we have been drawing different lines using pencil and chalk outside. In Science, we have used our sense of touch to describe different objects. We have also used different commands for our Beebots and are now becoming experts at moving the robot!

WC 15th September 2025.

Thankyou for another great week working hard! In English; we have been busy rehearsing our letter formation and we have also started to write short captions! We shared some great ideas about what we would find on our mission - including gold coins, chocolate coins, fossils and diamonds!

In Maths, we have now started counting forwards and backwards within 10. Thinking about one more than a number and one less.

We’ve had lots of fun in our art lessons and this week we made a super colour wheel. In Music, we’ve enjoyed counting the beat. In Geography, we’ve continued to think about the town we live in and sorted pictures of familiar physical and human features. See what you notice about our town on your walk to school! In Computing, we loved programming the directions on our Bee- bots (robots) - a great end to our week together.

WC 8th September 2025.

Wow we’ve all had such a busy, full week. In English, we have continued to read our story book and written all about how peckish and tired our characters are getting on their mission to dig a hole! We have also thought about which direction they could dig next - we had lots of fun trying out a maze to help us think about this. 😊

In Maths, we have continued to count within 10 - we have used tens frames to help us. We’ve also been writing our digits thinking about which ones we find tricky to form. Have a watch of numbers blocks - 'how to draw numbers' to help you. https://youtu.be/8ii202RoEd8

We’ve also been busy thinking about how we learn best at school and how we can be part of a safe and happy team in our classroom. We have started to think about where we live in Geography and enjoyed a listening sound walk all around our school grounds in Science ( to start our learning on senses and how we use the different parts of our body). In PE we’ve started jumping and rolling in gymnastics and played games on our outdoor field! We’ve also fitted in lots of time outside enjoying the different play areas.

Look out for your child’s phonics reading books in their home folders - please read these with your child.

WC 3rd September 2025.

Welcome to Year 1. We have had a great and busy few days getting back into the swing of school and getting to know our new routines.

We have already started a new English story - one where the characters Sam and Dave are going on an adventure! We predict they are looking for treasure! We have had lots of fun pretending to dig our own deep hole to see what we could find…

In Maths, we’ve had fun using our counting skills. We’ve sorted objects into groups and thought about how we can count carefully.

We’ve also had lots of fun exploring our outdoor areas - we especially loved playing in the new dinosaur zone!

Don’t forget we have a short parent meeting on Monday 8th September at 3.30pm - this will be held in the Year 1 Classroom. Come and meet everyone and let your child show you our classroom. We will also provide a summary of what your child will be learning this term.
