Autumn Term 2026

Week 6 - 05/10/26.

In English; we have read a new story - The giant jam sandwich! We have been learning about how to write instructions and how to use a bossy, imperative verb in our sentences. We have also continued to work hard in phonics and we have heard some super reading of our phonics books.

In Maths, we have really enjoyed comparing numbers. In PSHE we have discussed how it feels to be proud of ourselves. We have celebrated each other’s individual achievements. In RE, we had a thoughtful discussion about the story of Moses and the burning bush.We have continued to use our senses in Science; this week using our sense of taste.

We have continued to enjoy the few days of autumnal sunshine by playing outside using all our different resources.

Week 5 - 28/09/26.

This week we decided we would like to become experts on dogs and we have been exploring non-fiction books. We had a super visit to our local library in Sleaford. We met the librarian, learnt all about the books on offer to borrow and became a class library member. We were able to read lots of different books. We have been busy writing a cover page including title and illustration and writing lots of factual sentences about dogs. 

In Maths, we have continued to explore numbers within 10. We have been comparing amounts using mathematical vocabulary more than and fewer than.

We have continued building a short sequence in PE, using balance, spinning jumps and rolls. We have also continued with games - using underarm throws to a target. In Art, we have been looking at images using shape and started to create our own pictures. As Scientists, we continue to learn about the parts of our body and how we use our senses.  We finished our School week as Historians; hearing about the legend of St George and the Dragon. 

Week 4 - 21/09/26.

In English, we started reading a fun book called 'The Dog Detective'. We are continuing to say our writing ideas aloud and write carefully and neatly. Great job!

In Maths, we are using our tens frames and our number tracks to accurately make and find numbers. 

In Art, we have been drawing different lines using pencil and chalk outside. In Science, we have used our sense of touch to describe different objects. In RE; we have been learning about Judaism and the story of Moses. In Computing, we loved programming the directions on our Bee- bots (robots).We have also used different commands for our Beebots and are now becoming experts at moving the robot!

Week 3 - 14/09/26.

In English; we have continued to write simple sentences about our little Rainbow fish. We have used speech to describe the advice given by the wise octopus in the story. We have continued to rehearse our letter formation. 

In Maths, we have now started counting forwards and backwards within 10. Thinking about one more than a number and one less.

We’ve had lots of fun in our art lessons and this week we made a super colour wheel. In Geography, we’ve continued to think about the town we live in and sorted pictures of familiar physical and human features. See what you notice about our town on your walk to school! In PSHE, we have been thinking about 'me in our world' - we have discusssed how we can stay safe and how we learn best at school. 

Week 2 - 07/09/26

In English, we have continued reading The Rainbow Fish. We have been writing about his feelings and talking about how letters join together to make words. We have been learning that verbs are action words - we have been jumping, hopping, dancing, waving, standing and sitting and thinking of lots more examples.

Our Maths this week has focused on careful counting within 10, counting objects from a larger groups and then representing the number of objects. The children enjoyed representing objects using our giant tens frame and counters.

Our first Geography lesson intrduced the children to human features. We thought about where we live and worked as a team to identify human features in Sleaford.

In Science, we found out how our eyes work - that light comes into the eye through the pupil and sends the information to our brain which makes sense of it.

We had a visitor in school this week teaching the children some basic First Aid skills as well as how to call for help using 999. The children loved using their acting skills to fake injuries and treating their friends using plasters.

Week 1 - 31/08/26

Wow! Welcome back to school everyone, and a big welcome to our wonderful new Year 1 class.
It's been a short first week but already filled with lots of fun and learning.

Our first English learning has introduced us to the main character of our book - the Rainbow Fish. Some of the school fish came to visit our classroom and we got a close-up view of them swimming and darting around. This led us on to Friday's activity where we made our very own Rainbow Fish collage - the very sparkly and glittery fish are now decorating our classroom wall. We learned what a letter is and have been using the alphabet song to help us learn the names of the letters.

In Maths, we have been sorting and grouping objects based on their colour, shape, size and function.

Our History learning was all about how and why we celebrate the Trooping the Colour. To help us remember that it's the monarch's official birthday celebration, we will celebrate all Year 1 birthdays with a mini Trooping the Colour ceremony around the classroom complete with birthday crown for the birthday child and a ceremonial flag troop by the child's fellow house members.

In Science this term we will be learning about the different parts of our body with a focus on our senses. We started our learning with an overview of the main parts of the body. The children could identify lots of the parts already, but were excited to add ankles and wrists to their vocabulary.

A great start and the Year 1 team are looking forward to a great year.
