Week 2 - 07/09/26

In English, we have continued reading The Rainbow Fish. We have been writing about his feelings and talking about how letters join together to make words. We have been learning that verbs are action words - we have been jumping, hopping, dancing, waving, standing and sitting and thinking of lots more examples.

Our Maths this week has focused on careful counting within 10, counting objects from a larger groups and then representing the number of objects. The children enjoyed representing objects using our giant tens frame and counters.

Our first Geography lesson intrduced the children to human features. We thought about where we live and worked as a team to identify human features in Sleaford.

In Science, we found out how our eyes work - that light comes into the eye through the pupil and sends the information to our brain which makes sense of it.

We had a visitor in school this week teaching the children some basic First Aid skills as well as how to call for help using 999. The children loved using their acting skills to fake injuries and treating their friends using plasters.

Week 1 - 31/08/26

Wow! Welcome back to school everyone, and a big welcome to our wonderful new Year 1 class.
It's been a short first week but already filled with lots of fun and learning.

Our first English learning has introduced us to the main character of our book - the Rainbow Fish. Some of the school fish came to visit our classroom and we got a close-up view of them swimming and darting around. This led us on to Friday's activity where we made our very own Rainbow Fish collage - the very sparkly and glittery fish are now decorating our classroom wall. We learned what a letter is and have been using the alphabet song to help us learn the names of the letters.

In Maths, we have been sorting and grouping objects based on their colour, shape, size and function.

Our History learning was all about how and why we celebrate the Trooping the Colour. To help us remember that it's the monarch's official birthday celebration, we will celebrate all Year 1 birthdays with a mini Trooping the Colour ceremony around the classroom complete with birthday crown for the birthday child and a ceremonial flag troop by the child's fellow house members.

In Science this term we will be learning about the different parts of our body with a focus on our senses. We started our learning with an overview of the main parts of the body. The children could identify lots of the parts already, but were excited to add ankles and wrists to their vocabulary.
A great start and the Year 1 team are looking forward to a great year.
