WC 10.7.23

A fairly normal learning week in Year 1 – with lots of tasks completed. We are heading towards the end of a School year and it is hard to believe we are here already!!

In Maths, we have completed our money learning - recognising notes and counting different coins. We have also been learning about time – starting with time order and dates!

In English, we have created our own story beginning. We enjoyed coming up with how we could change the animal in our story and added lots of adjectives to describe them. We have also enjoyed looking back at photos of our trip to the Wildlife Park and everyone got busy writing a thankyou letter.

In Science, we have been planting and making labels of information about them. In Computing, we have continued to enjoy pictogram software. In Geography, we have thought about where it is hot and cold in the world, learnt about what the Equator is and where the North and South Poles are located. We have completed our History learning, sorting old and new on a timeline and recapping our learning by exploring images and artefacts over time. In PSHE, we have sensibly thought about how we change as we grow.

Well-done Year 1. What a busy week! Design and Technology Week coming up for our final week so we shall get our creative juices flowing on Monday! We will be designing and making a garage!

WC 3.7.23

This week we have mostly been learning outdoors! We had a super summer trip to the Wildlife park where we saw wolves, meerkats, penguins and more! It was a pleasure to visit and it was so lovely to hear the children say ‘they’d loved it’, 'they’d always wanted to see a live snake’ and they even got to touch it! The journey on the double decker bus was also extremely fun!

We had a great KS1 sports day on Wednesday - everyone loved doing all the morning activities including accurate netball shooting, javelin throwing, enthusiastic tri-golf and speed bouncing - to name a few! It was lovely to see all the parents in the afternoon and we were so proud of how well the children participated in the races and conducted themselves! We could only have one winning team but everyone was praised for such an excellent effort and speed!!

We have managed some Maths and English amongst this busy week!
In Maths, we have started to learn about money. We have been unitising and working out how many counters we needed to buy objects of different values. We have also started to recognise different coins.

In English, we have written more sentences - checking for our capital letters and full stops! We have read to the end of our story and enjoyed reading sentence strips from the story and trying to order them correctly!

Back to a slightly more normal routine next week. Spellings are recapping number words this week - try and write the word and form the digit! 😊

WC 26.6.23

This week has been assessment week and we have been busy with maths, reading and science - we are proud of the children for completing the tests so well - not easy when you are 5 or 6 years old! They demonstrated a good learning attitude - super job! 😊

In Maths, we also managed to fit in some comparisons of numbers. We used base 10 to help us and used the inequality signs.

In English, we continued to use the conjunction ‘but’ to extend our sentences. This time using contrasting adjectives to describe how the boy and the penguin in our story were feeling. We even  described the size of the ocean waves on our characters journey to the South Pole! Wow! We have also continued to work on Handwriting and our spellings - trying our best to make sure we get our year one tricky words correct and written neatly.

In Art we had lots of fun with pastels to continue creating pop art using contrasting colour. We have continued with our plant learning in Science. In History we have been exploring cameras and how technology has changed and developed over time. We have also been preparing for Sports day so we are ready for next Wednesday!

Reminder: Our Summer Class trip to the Wildlife Park is Tuesday 4.7.23.

WC 19.6.23

In Maths, we have continued to partition numbers into tens and ones. We have used number lines to count between 50 and 100. We have counted one more and one less using different resources. Everyone has really worked their socks off and enjoyed doing maths using greater numbers!

In English, we have enjoyed becoming experts on Penguins! We have read non fiction texts and then created our own super fact files. There were impressive drawings of different types of penguins with their features labelled. We finished the week exploring how to use the conjunction ‘but’ in our sentences and writing our ideas. Another busy and productive writing week.

In Geography, we have started to think about weather and climate. It seemed very apt as the weather was so varied on Tuesday - we experienced cloud, sun, rain and even thunder! In Science, we have continued to learn all about plants - this time thinking about the parts of a flower. In Art, we have enjoyed exploring contrasting colours used by Artists in pop art and then expressing our own ideas. Our PE has included dance skills and athletic skills - we have certainly had a busy week again!

WC 12.6.23

In Maths, this week we have started to count from 50 to 100. Everyone enjoyed this challenge and worked well to count from different numbers with a partner. Everyone is becoming familiar with our 100 square resource and by the end of the week we were competently looking at tens and ones!

In English, we have been busy retelling the start of our story (about the lost penguin) and writing some sentences about it. We even used some adverbials to explain when something happened and turned some sentences from past to present tense! Great job year 1!

In RE, we have been comparing creation stories in different religions. We enjoyed learning about Hinduism. We participated in the whole school Rock Concert in the middle of the week - everyone looked and sounded fabulous! In Science, we have been thinking about the differences between deciduous and evergreen trees.

It has been a busy phonics week for us and we are super proud of everyone’s hard work and for sticking at it in the hot weather. Well-done! And... keep reading!

WC 5.6.23

Welcome back after half term 😊

What a lovely start back we’ve had – Everyone has been working really hard in phonics – make sure you keep reading Year 1!

In Maths, we have continued with our Fractions work. We have recognised a quarter of different shapes and quantities. We have folded shapes, shaded quarters, drawn quarters in different ways and used plates and bar models with our counters to help us split quantities into four equal parts. Wow!

In English, an unhappy, lonely Penguin was found in our classroom. We predict he’s travelled from Antarctica! Our class showed true Church Lane kindness and really welcomed him into our class. We have asked lots of questions and also described how he must be feeling and what he looks like using some super adjectives. We hope you can imagine our glum, rejected penguin who is small and black. Pop in to see him!

In RE, we are comparing the creation stories of different religions. We have started with Christianity and everyone did a great job sequencing the story and adding some accurate captions. In Science, we are thinking about what we can find out about the plants around us – we have used leaves to decide which trees are which and why. In PE, we are dancing this term and also doing athletic skills on our field. We are getting ready for our KS1 Sports Day!

Spellings this term will be recapping all our year 1 tricky spellings – these are the spellings you just need to learn by practising! Look out for words that share the same letter strings!

Finally, thank you for your support with our ‘Wacky Wednesday’ - we will be selling a home time treat after school each Wednesday for this summer term. All money raised goes towards school trips for our children.

WC 22.5.23

In Maths, we have been thinking about fractions - recognising and finding a half of a shape and quantity. We realised that it is really important each part is equal - especially if it is chocolate!

In English, we wrote a super story ending based on our book 'Stanley's Stick' - we used past tense to write it and everyone added some lovely pictures to show all their different shaped sticks. Well-done.

In Geography, we completed our oceans work by locating and naming the oceans of our world. Everyone was very interested in the life living deep in the ocean and fascinated by the Marianna Trench in the deepest part of the Pacific! In PSHE, we have been thinking about what keeps us healthy. In History, we finished our week looking at tehnology from the past, using our experience at Mrs Smith's cottage to help us compare communication methods over time. We decided in the past we would send a written letter or post card and today we could use an email using our computer! So we did just that!

This term has disappeared far too quickly! Happy Half Term Everyone!

WC 15.5.23

In Maths, we have worked really hard on our multiplication and division. We started the week making arrays ( not easy to remember rows and columns!) , then made doubles and finished the week making groups and sharing! Wow year 1!

In English, we have been writing our known class story ‘ Stanley’s stick’ - lots of children used super describing words, spellings and even remembered adverbs! We then decided to innovate and change the object in our story to a ‘box’. Everyone had amazing ideas of what this could become and how we could use it to play with. We even wrote some noun phrases!

We have been doing lots of phonics and working hard to use our phonics 'fred talk' by spotting our 'special friends' in each word we read. Please keep reading at home and bring your home reading record into school daily.

In Art, we had a super time being creative with colour. Everyone’s pieces looked unique and vibrant. In PE, we had fun with team game skills on the field - developing our striking and fielding skills. We also started to link together our movements in gymnastics with a balanced shape at the start then transitioning into a roll.

It has been a busy week with our sponsored run (fundraiser event) on Thursday too! Brilliant job Year 1! Thank you so much for all your support. Staff are nervously in training ready to do our best with our school 3 Peaks challenge! We are determined to raise as much as we can for our local charities.

We also hope you all enjoyed the KS1 disco - a little Friday dancing is always a great way to end the week!

WC 9.5.23

In Maths, we have continued to count in 2,10s and also 5s! We are seeing the different patterns quickly now and enjoyed counting forwards and backwards! Backwards was much trickier! We have also started to think about equal groups and add them. A busy time with lots of accurate answers - welldone Year 1!

In English, we have predicted what the boy in our story will do with his special stick. We have written some super sentences (using adverbs!) and experimented writing our own ending to our story. Super job - lots of gold cards for writing effort. We then finished reading the book to see if we predicted the ending correctly. The author did give a few little surprises! We completed the week by sequencng the story and deciding which were the most important parts.

In Music, we used percussion instruments to create and choose sounds to match a dramatic clip from the Disney film 'Brave'. We were learning to count in and work together with our instruments to add texture. In PSHE, we have thought about how we feel when we are successful and how happy it makes us feel when we reach our goals. Talking about our successes really put a smile on our faces.

WC 2.5.23

In Maths, we’ve had lots of fun counting in 2s and 10s! We have looked at the diferent patterns, filled in missing numbers on number tracks and lines and thought carefully about what numbers we will and won't say and how we know we are correct.

In English, we have been enjoying our new story ‘ Stanley’s Stick’ and we have been imagining what game we might play with a stick, writing key words in sand using our sticks and then writing lots of super sentences.

In Science, we have continued to learn about animals - we are now thinking all about reptiles and amphibians and their different features. In ICT, we continue to think logically to follow and create simple instructions. Everyone looks forward to the ICT lessons!  In Geography we are thinking about the oceans around the world and we have started by learning about different bodies of water and their size. We also created some lovely imaginary landscapes with rivers, lakes and some children included the wild ocean. Lots of children were very proud of our local River Slea.

WC 24.4.23

This week, we have competed our learning about weight and mass in Maths. We have used cubes, sand, water and lots of different containers to help us. We compared the capacity and explained our answers. As a class we also applied our knowledge to some problem solving questions! We have also started new learning about Mutiplication. We have been counting in twos! It's amazing how quick and efficient it is and how many pairs we spotted that we could count - pairs of shoes, socks, eyes, ears...the list is endless!

In English, we were intrigued by the huge egg in our story and shocked when our 'odd egg' hatched into an Alligator! What a surprise! We were fascinated by this and it inspired us to read all about reptiles - Alligators and Crocodiles. We used our new expert knowledge to create a fact file (just in case you ever spot a similar egg and wonder who it belongs to!) Everyone wrote some amazing statements about what the eggs look like, where you might find them and how they hatch! The illustrations were fantastic too. Super Scientific knowledge!

In PSHE, we have continued to discuss our dreams and goals but this week we tried to work as a good partner with a friend. We agreed a shared goal and took turns to record our idea. In Geography, we quizzed our knowledge on continents and we have started to now think about the different bodies of water on our planet. We started to think about the differences between them and compare the size. In Art, we have shared our own ideas abour pop art, selecting different images. In PE, we have also started some gymnastics - learning different ways to roll.

On Thursday Mrs Wardell orgainsed a WOW History learning day! We enjoyed an amazing trip to Mrs Smith’s Cottage - which is only a few miles away from our school (in the village of Navenby).  We stepped back in time to discover an old home that was full of household items set in the past. How different our kitchens and bedrooms are today in comparison! There was no electricity! We experienced how to wash clothes in an old dolly tub, stirring them with a plunger and hanging them out to dry. Good job it was a lovely, dry and windy day! We discovered the past through exploring a sensory memory box full of different sounds from the past. We loved listening to the old songs on the radio. Did you know the remarkable lady that owned the house lived until she was 102 years old! What a strong lady Mrs Smith must have been. What a super day we had Year 1. A big thankyou to all the volunteers who helped including our school Governors.

WC 18.4.23

A great start back to our summer term and we have enjoyed some lovely, sunnier play times outside. We have had a busy week!

In Maths, we have continued to learn about mass and volume. We have been using maths terms such as heavier or lighter and full and empty. We have been comparing both mass and volume.

In English, we have continued to read our story ‘ The odd egg’ by Emily Gravett. We have been predicting what the baby birds will look like when they hatch. Everyone was especially interested in baby flamingos and how they get their pink colour! We have used  ‘and’ to join our ideas in our sentences and used the possessive apostrophe. We have also got straight back into our phonics learning.Super job!

In Geography, we have been comparing some of the differences between continents using atlases and the help of the ‘Go Jetters’ adventure seeking cartoon .In Science, we have began to think about how our pets are different to the wild animals around us.In PSHE, we have thought about the steps we take to achieve tricky learning and everyone had lots of fabulous examples from their own experiences. In Art, we have started to explore pop art pictures and think about the common features. In PE, we had a windy session developing our technique for throwing and catching out on the school field!
