In English, we have started a new story titled ‘Grandad’s Island' and written by Benji Davies. A little boy called Syd loves to visit his Grandad’s house. Grandad shows him all his treasured possessions that he keeps in his attic. We have loved looking at and describing these objects using lots of super adjectives. Including a scratched, battered suit case, a rusty, old birdcage and a cracked, broken teapot! We have written some super sentences about how much Grandad loves them despite them being old and worn out.
In Maths, we have had a very busy week of learning! We have continued our learning about position and direction. We have given accurate directions to move forwards, backwards and left and right. We have also described the position of objects using these; alongside above and below. Everyone thought carefully about the position of toys on toy shelves and described this to their friends. Finally, we learnt about ordinal numbers. We are very good at describing how we can use equipment in PE lessons and our potential positions in sports day!
We have also started to learn how to count within 100. We have used a 100 square to rehearse finding different numbers and think about patterns that we could see. Great job!
We have all had a very busy phonics week; working hard to read words using all our phonics sounds and complete our phonics screening check. Fantastic job Year 1 - we are very proud of all your effort.
In PSHE, we are now learning about how we change. We have started to think about the lifecycle of different creatures. We have also thought about we have changed. Everyone loved thinking about what they were like as a baby, then as a toddler compared to now. Look out for your child’s drawings of themselves in their book bags and how they feel they have changed and grown.
In Music, we have been singing, playing percussion instruments and learning songs about different transport. Great musicality! In PE, we have started our preparation for KS1 sports day - hold the diary date - the afternoon of 10th July.

Welcome back for Summer term 2!
The week has whizzed by! We have all enjoyed recapping our story book about the Bear and the Piano. We had fun coming up with our own happy ever after endings - including ‘tunefully ever after’ as the Bear was able to return home and share his musical ability with all his forest friends. We also came up with our own unusual object and wrote our own original story.
In Maths, we have been thinking about position and direction this week. Learning all about left, right, forwards, backwards and having a go to do quarter, half, three quarter and full turns! Think about your left and right at home and try and explain the position of different objects in your home or out and about this weekend!
As part of our History learning, we had a super morning at Mrs Smiths cottage in Navenby on Thursday. We learnt about how things were for those living 100 years ago. Did you know that homes didn’t have electricity and washing was done by hand?

We have done lots of reading and phonics - you will find QR codes in your child’s home reading folder - please help your child watch and join in with the phonics videos online. Your child will be able to show you what an expert they are becoming at decoding words to read!

What a great start to our week! We all had a fabulous day on our whole school trip to Rand Farm. A well deserved treat for all our children following our recent Outstanding Ofsted rating. We enjoyed visiting the hatchery, a tractor ride across the fields and meeting the large and small animals. A favourite was feeding the cute but ravenous lambs! We had to hold on tight to their feeding bottles! Everyone had a smile on their face and enjoyed a day of fun with their friends. We even had time to relax in the play park and learn the skill of archery! We certainly all slept well on Monday evening!
In Maths, we have continued counting in different ways - in twos, in tens and in fives. We have used resources to help us including socks, tens frames and our hands!
In English, we have read on in our story of Little Red Riding Hood. We have enjoyed the part where the mean wolf enters the story. We used verbs to describe how he moved. We wrote about how he was bounding, leaping and powling in the forest by Granny's cottage! When the wolf was thumping and growling at Granny's cottage door some thought Granny would be terrified and hide. However, many of our class decided Granny was brave and fearless and would confront the wolf! Finally, the Hunter enters our story and we finished our week learning how to write in past tense.
