Autumn Term 2025
Reminders:
PE is on Tuesday and Friday.
Homework will be spellings and timestables. They will be sent home every other Friday, children need to practice these at home for the test.

A great week in Year 5! We have worked really hard in Maths, looking at some more challenging aspects of addition and subtraction. First, we looked at the use of inverse operations to check answers, then we moved onto mutli-step problems. Next, we compare and ordered calculations before finding missing numbers.
In English, we spent time at the beginning of the week publishing our narratives and creating some lovely books, which are on display outside the classroom. We then moved onto our next writing unit, looking at a non-chronologial report. We spent some time understanding the shapes used in this genre of writing, by using a model text on Arctic foxes. We then completed our first experience day, learning about the lifecycles of Emperor Penguins.
In History this week, we learnt about where the Anglo-Saxons settled in Britain. We looked at the reasons for the locations of their settlements and the seven Kingdoms that were created during this time; Mercia, East Anglia, Northumbria, Essex, Wessex, Susses and Kent.
In RE, we looked at artefacts in Christian churches and how they link to worship, rituals and ceremonies. We looked at the shapes of churches and why they have a tower or a spire.
On Thursday, we enjoyed a workshop from 'Beatbox Collective'. We learnt about making sounds with our mouths and bodies and had a go at recreating some different sounds. We then enjoyed a Beatbox battle, with Year 6!
W/C 29th September
We have had a very busy week in Year 5! We have started our new unit of learning in Maths, Addition and Subtraction. We started off with looking at mental strategies, before adding numbers with more than 4 digits and then subtracting numbers with more than 4 digits. We finished the week off by using rounding to check our answers.
In English this week, we have been working on our independent write. We were task with writing our own versions of 'Gorilla' First we created our own success criteria, before making a plan - plotting out where we would include the key features. We then spent two lessons drafting, before spending time editing and improving our writing. We will be publishing these into books next week.
In Science this week, we continued our learning on lifecycles. In this lesson, we looked at the lifecycles of amphibians and fish, looking at the similarities and differences before producing our own lifecycles.
In RE, we continued with our learning on Christianity. This week, we looked at how the buildings of the different denominations of Christianity link to worship, rituals and ceremonies.
In Art, we enjoyed looking at how we can change the texture of lines. We created lines using charcoal and explored how we can change the texture of this line by smudging the charcoal.
This week, we also had a visit from some Sleaford PCSO's to introduce the role of Mini Police to the children. Five Mini Police officers were chosen, who are looking forward to their new role.
W/C 22nd September
Another fantastic week in Year 5. We have been flying through our Maths learning, spending time this week comparing ad ordering numbers - first uo to 100,000 then up to 1,000,000. We then moved onto rounding numbers. First we looked at rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000. Next we looked at rounding within 100,000 and finally within 1,000,000.
In English, we have come to the end of our sentence stacking lessons for the unit 'Gorilla'. This week, we have recovered dialogue, complex sentences, adverbial phrases and repetition. We also looked at smells and tastes before trying our hand at writing some metaphors.
In Geography, we looked closely at the continent of South America. We used an atlas to identify as many countries and their capital cites as possible.
In Science, we moved onto the lifecycles of birds and reptiles - looking at the similarities and differences within the lifecycles of these two different groups of animals.
We also enjoyed an Art lesson this week, where we looked at how we can layer colours for effect. We explored how we can layer the same medium to create different effects, using a basic watercolour wash and colouring pencils.
W/C 15th September
We've had a great week in Year 5. In Maths, we have continued our learning on Place Value - looking at Powers of 10, 10, 100, 1,000 and 10,000 more or less, paritioning numbers to 1,000,000 and finally a number line to 1,000,000.
In English, we have enjoyed our lessons on 'Gorilla' by Anthony Browne. In our sentence stacking lessons, we have used relative clauses, complex sentences, adverbs, repetition, adjectives, dialogue, similes and onomatopeia.
We completed another Geography lesson, this time looking at why North America is a continent of extremes, focusing on the different climates that can be found in the vast continent. We looked at how some parts are close to the Arctic circle, whilst others are close to the equator.
In Science, we focused our learning on the life cycles of mammals. We looked at the different types of mammals and what their life cycles look like.
In RE, we started our learning on Christianity. We spent time looking at some of the different denominations, specifically focusing on Roman Catholic, Anglican, Presbryterian, Methodist, Baptist and Quakers. We looked at how their places of worship differ as well as how their worship is slightly different.
We have also enjoyed two PE lessons this week - Basketball and Gymnastics, where we made paired bridge balances and put them into a sequence.
W/C 8th September
Our first full week in Year 5 has been a good one. We started off our Maths learning of Place Value, initially looking at Roman numerals before moving through numbers up to 1,000,000.
In English, we started our first unit based on the book 'Gorilla', by Anthony Browne. Our first lesson, was an experience day, where the children came up with thier own moonlit journeys. We then moved onto our sentence stacking lessons, using relative clauses, verbs, nouns, adjectives and modal verbs.
In Science, we started our unit on life cycles. We began by looking at what reproduction is and how some animals can create offspring on their own and others need two parents.
We also completed a second Geography lesson, where we looked at physical and human features that can be found in North America. We spent time looking more closey at the Rocky Mountains and the Great Plains, comparing the two landscapes and looking at industries that can be found in these areas.
In History, we started our unit on the Anglo-Saxons and the Picts. We looked at the different groups of people that made up the Anglo-Saxons and why they came to Britain.
W/C 1st September
What a lovely first three days we have had! The children have settled in beautifully and have spent time this week re-visiting our behaviuor curriculum and expectations. We have also done lots of PSHE, looking at the year ahead, the rights of a child and our responsibilities as learners.
We also completed a Geography lesson, looking at the countries that make up North America and looking at the largest country - Canada. We looked at the seas and oceans that surround North America before learning that North America is the third largest continent in the world.
We also completed a Music lesson this week, which focused on the performance of the song 'Our Community'. We looked at the pulse following a 4 beat and added a box step to help us maintain a rhythm.
