Autumn Term 2025
Reminders:
PE is on Tuesday and Friday.
Homework will be spellings and timestables. They will be sent home every other Friday, children need to practice these at home for the test.
W/C 15th December
It's the final week of term and Year 5 have been working hard right to the end!
We have completed two more RE lessons this week on Christianity. First we looked at why it is necessary for Chritains to worship together, focusing on what happens during Holy Communion and Pentecost. Next, we looked at how language within worship might express Christian belief, lookin at the languge used in some prayers and Pslams. Finally, we finished off with an end of unit quiz.
In Geography, we carried on with our learning on Time Zones, we looked at what it is like in Australia when its night in the United Kingdom. We then completed our end of unit quiz.
In Science, we completed our work on the Human lifecycle. We collated all of our learning from this term to create our own timeline of humna development.
We also completed an extended write, linked to our History learning this week. We discussed the question of why the Anglo-Saxons came to Britain and what evidence there is to back this up. We gathered notes from our lessons, before writing our own answer to this question.
In Computing, we completed our final lesson on systems looking at how searches are influenced.
We also enjoyed Music this week, perfroming our song Jerusleum Fusion. We also completed another Art lesson, creating sculptures in clay.
W/C 8th December
This week, we have been pushing on with lots of new learning! In Maths, we have continued our work on adding and sutracting fractions. We started by adding fractions with a total less tan 1, then moved onto fractions with a total greater than 1. We then looked at adding to a mixed number, before adding two mixed numbers. Finally, we moved onto subtracting fractions.
We completed another two lessons on the human lifecycle in Science. We looked at what life is like for teenagers, focusing on puberty and increasing independence. We then looked at what life is like for adults and old people - looking at how levels of fitness peak at early adulthood and then decline into later adulthood.
We completed two Geography lessons, the first we learnt about time zones ans in the second we looked inti whether or not a country can have more than one time zone.
In RE, we looked at why communal celebration is important to Christians. We focused on Holy Communion and Pentecost and how they bring Christians together.
In Computing, we continued our learning on systems. We looked at refining searches on the internet and then how searches are ranked. We learnt about index and web crawlers.
W/C 1st December
What a busy week we have had!!! This week has been Design and Technology Week, as well as Bikeability week!
On Monday, all of Year 5 took their bikes onto the 3G to embark in their Level 1 Bikeability. They learnt how to make sure their bike was safe to ride, checking tyres, brakes, chain and handle bars. They then worked on their cycling skills around the 3G.
On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, some of Year 5 took to the roads. They learnt how to make left and right turns, in and out of junctions, pass parked cars and turn in the road.
Throughout the week, we also completed our D&T project - Christmas Cross-Stitch. We created a design citeria based on the design brief, then planned our cross-stitch patterns before spending time creating them. Once finished, we evaluated them and looked at how we could improve them.
We also managed to squeeze in another Maths lesson, where we looked at adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator.
W/C 24th November
This week has been assessment week. The children have worked really hard on all of their assessments, including; Reading Comprehension, Maths, Science and Reading Fluency.
In amoungst all of the assessments, we have manged to squeeze in some more Maths. We looked at converting mixed numbers to improper fractions, comparing fractions less than 1, order fractions less than 1 and the comparing and order fractions greater than 1.
In English, we have spent the week drafting our independent write, a non-chronological report on Polar Bears.
We also completed a Science lesson, looking at what life is like for babies and children. In Hisotry, we looked at the impact that the Anglo-Saxons have had on our local area.
W/C 17th November
We have enjoyed another busy week in Year 5. In Maths, we moved onto our unit on Fractions. We started off by looking at equivalent fractions - of a unit fraction, a non-unit fraction and then recognising equivalents - next we looked at converting an improper fraction into a mixed number.
In English, we started our work for our independent write. We will be writing a non-chronological report on Polar Bears. We created our own sucess criteria, completed some research on Polar Bears and their home, before starting our plan. Next week, we will finish our plan and start drafting.
In Science, we began our new unit on the human lifecycle. Our first lesson was looking at what life is like for a foetus.
In History, we spent the lesson comparing the Anglo-Saxons and the Picts, looking at their culture, religion, society and reasons for migration.
We also had a visit from the Sleaford PSCO's this week, for one of our Mini-Police sessions. We learnt about Anti-social behaviour.
On Friday, we enjoyed a Poetry workshop, where we created our own poem.
W/C 10th November
We have had a lovely first week back. We have hit the ground running and got straight into our Maths, continuing our work on Multiplication and Division. We looked at square numbers and cube numbers and then multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000 and before moving onto Multiplying multiples.
In English, we continued our sentence stacking lessons, based on a non-chronological report on Emerpor Penguins. We looked at repetition, using technical language, relative clauses and adjectives.
In the afternoons this week, we worked through our next unit of PSHE - Celebrating difference.
W/C 20th October
The last week of term has seen Year 5 completing their units of work in Geography and RE.
In RE, we first looked at Christian symobls and how they link to rituials and ceremonies, before learning about Koinonia. To complete the unit if work, we then carried out a end of unit quiz, testing our understanding.
In Geography, we completed our final lesson on the continents of America, by learning why the Amazon Basin is one of the most important places in the world. We then completed our end of unit quiz, before completing an extended write on how human features in North and South America link to the physical features.
We also completed some more Maths, looking at common factors, before learning about Prime numbers.
in computing, we completed some more learning on systems and then looked at seraching the web.
In Music, we completed another lesson based on our song 'Our community'. We wrote and performed our own lyrics to the 'Here and Now' section and then to the 'in the Past section'. We then moved onto learniong our next song, 'Jeruselum Fusion'.
W/C 13th October
This week, we have continued to work hard in all areas of the curriculum. In English, we completed another expereince day on Emperor Penguins, before starting our sentence stacking lessons. We started off by using alliteration and puns for our heading, before using relative clauses, expanded noun phrases and superlatives. Next, we used a rhetorical question for a sub-heading and used modal verbs, adjectives and complex sentences. Finally, we looked at adverbials, colons, long and short sentences and using technical language.
In Maths, we spent some more time working on finding missing numbers whilst balancing equations, before moving onto our next unit on multiplication and division. To begin with, we learn about multiples, common multiples and then factors.
In History, we learnt about the Picts, who they were, where they lived and thier relationship with the Anglo-Saxons.
In Science, we looked into how the lifecycles and reproductions of plants differ from thos of animals.
W/C 6th October
A great week in Year 5! We have worked really hard in Maths, looking at some more challenging aspects of addition and subtraction. First, we looked at the use of inverse operations to check answers, then we moved onto mutli-step problems. Next, we compare and ordered calculations before finding missing numbers.
In English, we spent time at the beginning of the week publishing our narratives and creating some lovely books, which are on display outside the classroom. We then moved onto our next writing unit, looking at a non-chronologial report. We spent some time understanding the shapes used in this genre of writing, by using a model text on Arctic foxes. We then completed our first experience day, learning about the lifecycles of Emperor Penguins.
In History this week, we learnt about where the Anglo-Saxons settled in Britain. We looked at the reasons for the locations of their settlements and the seven Kingdoms that were created during this time; Mercia, East Anglia, Northumbria, Essex, Wessex, Susses and Kent.
In RE, we looked at artefacts in Christian churches and how they link to worship, rituals and ceremonies. We looked at the shapes of churches and why they have a tower or a spire.
On Thursday, we enjoyed a workshop from 'Beatbox Collective'. We learnt about making sounds with our mouths and bodies and had a go at recreating some different sounds. We then enjoyed a Beatbox battle, with Year 6!
W/C 29th September
We have had a very busy week in Year 5! We have started our new unit of learning in Maths, Addition and Subtraction. We started off with looking at mental strategies, before adding numbers with more than 4 digits and then subtracting numbers with more than 4 digits. We finished the week off by using rounding to check our answers.
In English this week, we have been working on our independent write. We were task with writing our own versions of 'Gorilla' First we created our own success criteria, before making a plan - plotting out where we would include the key features. We then spent two lessons drafting, before spending time editing and improving our writing. We will be publishing these into books next week.
In Science this week, we continued our learning on lifecycles. In this lesson, we looked at the lifecycles of amphibians and fish, looking at the similarities and differences before producing our own lifecycles.
In RE, we continued with our learning on Christianity. This week, we looked at how the buildings of the different denominations of Christianity link to worship, rituals and ceremonies.
In Art, we enjoyed looking at how we can change the texture of lines. We created lines using charcoal and explored how we can change the texture of this line by smudging the charcoal.
This week, we also had a visit from some Sleaford PCSO's to introduce the role of Mini Police to the children. Five Mini Police officers were chosen, who are looking forward to their new role.
W/C 22nd September
Another fantastic week in Year 5. We have been flying through our Maths learning, spending time this week comparing ad ordering numbers - first uo to 100,000 then up to 1,000,000. We then moved onto rounding numbers. First we looked at rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000. Next we looked at rounding within 100,000 and finally within 1,000,000.
In English, we have come to the end of our sentence stacking lessons for the unit 'Gorilla'. This week, we have recovered dialogue, complex sentences, adverbial phrases and repetition. We also looked at smells and tastes before trying our hand at writing some metaphors.
In Geography, we looked closely at the continent of South America. We used an atlas to identify as many countries and their capital cites as possible.
In Science, we moved onto the lifecycles of birds and reptiles - looking at the similarities and differences within the lifecycles of these two different groups of animals.
We also enjoyed an Art lesson this week, where we looked at how we can layer colours for effect. We explored how we can layer the same medium to create different effects, using a basic watercolour wash and colouring pencils.
W/C 15th September
We've had a great week in Year 5. In Maths, we have continued our learning on Place Value - looking at Powers of 10, 10, 100, 1,000 and 10,000 more or less, paritioning numbers to 1,000,000 and finally a number line to 1,000,000.
In English, we have enjoyed our lessons on 'Gorilla' by Anthony Browne. In our sentence stacking lessons, we have used relative clauses, complex sentences, adverbs, repetition, adjectives, dialogue, similes and onomatopeia.
We completed another Geography lesson, this time looking at why North America is a continent of extremes, focusing on the different climates that can be found in the vast continent. We looked at how some parts are close to the Arctic circle, whilst others are close to the equator.
In Science, we focused our learning on the life cycles of mammals. We looked at the different types of mammals and what their life cycles look like.
In RE, we started our learning on Christianity. We spent time looking at some of the different denominations, specifically focusing on Roman Catholic, Anglican, Presbryterian, Methodist, Baptist and Quakers. We looked at how their places of worship differ as well as how their worship is slightly different.
We have also enjoyed two PE lessons this week - Basketball and Gymnastics, where we made paired bridge balances and put them into a sequence.
W/C 8th September
Our first full week in Year 5 has been a good one. We started off our Maths learning of Place Value, initially looking at Roman numerals before moving through numbers up to 1,000,000.
In English, we started our first unit based on the book 'Gorilla', by Anthony Browne. Our first lesson, was an experience day, where the children came up with thier own moonlit journeys. We then moved onto our sentence stacking lessons, using relative clauses, verbs, nouns, adjectives and modal verbs.
In Science, we started our unit on life cycles. We began by looking at what reproduction is and how some animals can create offspring on their own and others need two parents.
We also completed a second Geography lesson, where we looked at physical and human features that can be found in North America. We spent time looking more closey at the Rocky Mountains and the Great Plains, comparing the two landscapes and looking at industries that can be found in these areas.
In History, we started our unit on the Anglo-Saxons and the Picts. We looked at the different groups of people that made up the Anglo-Saxons and why they came to Britain.
W/C 1st September
What a lovely first three days we have had! The children have settled in beautifully and have spent time this week re-visiting our behaviuor curriculum and expectations. We have also done lots of PSHE, looking at the year ahead, the rights of a child and our responsibilities as learners.
We also completed a Geography lesson, looking at the countries that make up North America and looking at the largest country - Canada. We looked at the seas and oceans that surround North America before learning that North America is the third largest continent in the world.
We also completed a Music lesson this week, which focused on the performance of the song 'Our Community'. We looked at the pulse following a 4 beat and added a box step to help us maintain a rhythm.
