In Music, we finished our final practice of our three note Reggae, on the recorder. We practiced ad them completed our final perfomance, before completing our end of unit assessment.

We also spent some time completing our Computing units on Online safety.

I hope you all have a lovely half term break and will see you back on Tuesday 18th April.

W/C 27th March

The last full week of the term and Year 5 are still working their socks off! In maths, we have come to the end of our work on decimals, fractions and percentages. We have learnt to round decimals to one decimal place before moving onto understandign percentages. We looked at how to write percentages as fractions and as decimlas, then looked at equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages.

In English, we have enjoyed reading the first few pages of 'The Sleeper and the Spindle'. We have done a lot of work on expanded noun phrases and different ways to use these in our writing. We have also looked at relative clauses to add information to our dialogue. We write a diary entry as the queen and a description of the castle, in the style of an estate agent.

In History, we learnt about Canute the Great and why he was an influencial king. We learnt about the treaty between him and Edmund, which was suspicious to say the least!

In RE, we looked at some inspirational Muslims ans what impact they have on the faith of Muslims. We specifically focused on Mo Farah and Nadiya Hussian.

In Geography we looked at how we can make a positive impact on the River Slea, what we can do to reduce pollution and protect the eco-systems and wildlife. We came up with our own plans to try and combat the pollution.

In Art, we looked at how we can make paper 3D and focused specifically on quilling. We learnt the different techniques and then made our own creations.

In Music, we continued to learn to play a three notes Reggae on the recorder. We learnt how to play the notes G, A and B, before putting them together. We will continue to practice this next week and record our final performance as a small emsemble.

W/C 20th March

It is getting ever closer to the half term break, but Year 5 are still going strong! We have been continuing to work hard in our work on decimals, in Maths. We have introduced thousandths and started to compare and order decimlas, before finishing the week with rounding to the nearest whole number.

In English, having finished our Big Write last week, we carried out some additional work on dialogue, before completing our DIRT Activity. We then started our new book 'The Sleeper and the Spindle'. We looked at Fairy Tales, thinking about the themes and then the differences and similarities, before completing a Venn diagram. We read the opening passage, where we were introduced to a perilous mountain range! We wrote warning posters, warning people not to cross the border between the two kingdoms, which runs through the mountain range!

In Science, we completed another experiment, looking at if we can combat the effects of gravity on something that is heavy. We looked at pulleys and levers and had a go at making some work! In Geography, we looked at pollution and how if affects our local area. We learnt about the different types of pollution and read some articles about pollution in the River Slea. In RE, we learnt about the two Eid's, why Muslims celebrate them and how.

We started to look at a three note Reggae, in Music! We got out the recorders and learnt how to hold them and blow into them! We will be continuing this next week!

We really enjoyed our Art lesson this week, looking at Art in industry. We looked at hoe icing can be layered for effect. We planned our own layers of icing on a biscuit, before having a go and making them! We then took them home to eat! Here are a few of our creations:

W/C 13th March

It has been assessment week this week and Year 5 have worked their socks off completing Maths Reading and Science assessments. We also completed our Big Writes, a sequel of 'The Island'. There were some lovely stories, with excellent description and dialogue. Well done to all of Year 5!

We managed to squeeze in some History, RE and Geography, as well this week. In History, looking at the Vikings, we focused on what changed after 954 AD, learning about Eric Bloodaxe and King Eadred. We also looked at the River Witham and compared how that is used. In RE, we looked at the second pillar of Islam, Salat, how Muslims pray, including what times of the day and certain rituals which are performed.

W/C 6th March

Year 5 have been working really hard again this week. We have been developing our understanding of decimals, in maths, looking at tenths and hundreths, including equivalent fractions. We then moved onto thousandths.

In Science, we carried out an experiment, looking at whether we can combat the effects of gravity on something that is falling. We carried out some research and then created parachutes out of different materials. We predicted which parachute would work the best, before testing them out, by dropping them from the top of the climbing frame! Turns out you can make an effecive parachute out of paper, bun bags and bags for life! Fabric and tissue paper, didn't work as well!!

In History, we continued our work on the Vikings and focused on what happened after Danelaw, completing a timeline of events.

In Art, we looked at contemporary fashion, with Mrs Freeman. We did some research and then desinged our own outfits with a contemporary style!

W/C 16th January

Another great week in Year 5. We have working really hard on consolidating our knowledge and understanding of multiplying by a 2 digit number, by moving onto multiplying a 3 digit number by a 2 digit number and multiplying a 4 digit number by a 2 digit number. Have a look at the videos below for extra support with this area of learning:

Multiply a 3 digit number by a 2 digit number https://vimeo.com/771240161

Multiply a 4 digit number by a 2 digit number https://vimeo.com/771240666

We then moved onto solving problems with multiplication and started looking at short division.

In English, we are coming to the end of our work on 'The Lost Thing'. If you would like to watch the short film and discuss it with your child, then click the link, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILUxUrjjpyg We then planned our own version of 'The Lost Thing' and will begin writing it next week.

W/C 9th January

The first full week of the new year and Year 5 have been working really hard.

In Maths, we have started our new toopic of Multiplication and Division. We looked at multiplying a 4 digit number by a 1 digit number and then progressed to multiplying a 2 digit number by a 2 digit number. First, we looked at the area model method, followed by the long multiplication method. This was a new concept for the children, but they persevered! Next week we will be moving onto multiplying a 3 digit number by a 2 digit number. If your child needs some additional support with these areas, then please watch the following videos and have a go at some questions.

In English, we have continued our work on 'The Lost Thing'. We have looked at how to vary the way sentences begin, using subordinate clauses, the subjunctive form, modal verbs, using a range of sentence forms and relative clauses.

We have completed a lot of topic work this week. In RE we started our new learning on Islam and looked at what happens at a mosque as well as what is ummah. In Hisotry, we started our new topic of the Vikings, looking at who were the Vikings. In Geography, we explored the water cycle and what it is.

We have done some recap work on Fractions in Maths, developing our knowledge of adding and subtracting mixed number fractions. In English, we started our new book, 'The Lost Thing'. We spent our first lesson listening to some audio from the book, predicting what we thought we could hear and using adjectives and verbs to describe the sounds. We then moved onto looking at appropriate synonyms, to improve our writing.

We started our new Science topic, on space and looked at what a Solar System is and why we have one.

We completed some Art on Friday afternoon, looking at different features of the body and how we can sketch them.
