Spring Term 2026
Reminders:
PE is on Monday and Tuesday. Swimming will run every day from Monday 26th January to Friday 6th February.
Homework will be spellings and timestables. They will be sent home every other Friday, children need to practice these at home for the test.
W/C 9th March
We have had a great week in Year 5! We started off on Monday with a trip to Heckington Windmill - which links to our learning in Science. We had a tour of the Windmill, looking at hoe pulleys and gears are used. We then took part in a gears workshop, trying to make the gears work. We then enjoyed a bread making workshop, where we each made our own Sourdough loaf!
We have been working well in Maths this week, continuing our work on decimals and percentages. We learnt about equivalent decimals and fractions - hundredths - then we looked at other equivalent decimals and fractions before focusing on thousandths.
In English, we started the process of our next independent write. We created our own sucess criteria before watching some clips of the filming of Dynasties. We then planned our writing - a diary entry in the perspective of a member of the Dynasties camera crew.
In Science, we focused on gravity. We learnt what it is, how it works and who discovered it.
In History, we carried on our learning on the Vikings. We looked at what happened in the lead up to 954 and then what changed after 954.
We also enjoyed our visit from the Planetarium. Our session linked to last terms learning on space. We learnt some more interesting facts about the planets in our solar system and what we can see in the night sky.
W/C 2nd March
We have had another busy week in Year 5 - A walk to the River Slea and World Book Day!!
In Maths, we have completed the last two lessons on fractions, we looked at finding the whole and then using fractions as operators. We then moved onto our new unit on Decimals, Fractions and Percentages. We started this learning by looking at decimals up to 2 decimal places and then looked at equivalent fractions and decimals (specifically tenths) .
In English, we completed five more sentence stacking lessons of our diary. This week we looked at using personification, adjectives, time adverbials and oxymorons.
In Geography, we walked along the River Slea up to Cogglesford Mill. In doing this, we were looking for the features of rivers - from last terms learning. This gave us an understanding of the river in oour local area. We also used ordanance survey maps to find the source of the river Slea and then followed it to where it meets the River Witham and finally into the sea.
In RE, we learnt about the Muslim washing ritual of Wudu and the steps that are taken in performing this. We also looked at its importance and what it symbolises.
In PSHE, we continued our work on 'Healthy Me' and discussed alcohol, the dangers it poses and how to make an informed decision.
W/C 23rd February
A great first week back after half term! We have picked up where we left off in Maths, continuing our work on Fractions. We have learnt how to multiply a mixed number by an integer, how to find the fraction of a quantity and how to calculate the fraction of an amount.
In English, we started our new unit on 'Scott of the Antarctic', this follws the story of the race to the South Pole in 1911. First, we looked at the shapes used to write a diary entry and then completed an experience day to experience what it would have been like being in the Antarctic in 1911. We then moved onto our first couple of sentence stacking lessons, using verbs, relative clauses, similes, adjectives and adverbials.
In RE, we have continued our learning on Islam from last term. This week, we learnt about Hajj, which is the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca. We looked at why Muslims carry out Hajj and some of the events and rituals that happen when they are there.
In History, we continued our learning on the Vikings. This week, we looked at why there was so much rivalry between the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings and learnt about Danelaw.
In Science, we started our new unnit on forces. We started off by learning what a force is. We learnt how they impact movement and learnt about air resistance, water resistance, friction and gravity.
In PSHE, we started our topic of 'Healthy Me', this week we learnt about the dangers of smoking and vaping. We spoke about why people my start doing this and spoke about how we can make infomred decisions.
W/C 9th February
This week some of Year 5 have enjoyed a week at Hilltop, for their residential.
Those that didn't go, have spent the time revisiting prior Maths and English learning and taking part in a lot of Art!
W/C 26th January
Year 5 have had a busy week, swimming every afternoon in the first week of their two week block!
We have been working hard on Multiplication and Division in Maths, looking at efficient division methods and then solving worded probelms with multiplication and division. We then moved onto our second unit on fractions, by learning how to multiply a fraction by an integer.
In English, we completed our final sentence stacking lesson using time adverbials, feelings, verbs and inner thoughts. We then moved onto our independent write, by creating our success criteria and then planning our paragraphs.
W/C 19th Janaury
Another great week in Year 5. We started off in Maths by solving problems using multiplication, applying the skills we learnt last week. We then moved onto division, building up to dividing a 4 digit number by a 1 digit number.
In PSHE, we looked at how we can support one another, including how we can support people in other countries.
In Science, we learnt about our moon. We learnt about how it orbits the Earth every 28 days and how and why it looks different in the sky each night. We then learnt about how the moon impacts the tides on Earth.
In History, we learnt about why the Vikings were so sucessful a raiding. We looked at their training and how they always carried weapons. We also discussed how they planned thier attacks carefully.
In RE, we looked at what happens during Ramadan, looking at why Muslims fast and the celbrating they have after this holy month.
A reminder that next week is the start of our swimming lessons. The children will be swimming every afternoon for the next two weeks. Please ensure that your child has their swimming kit in school every day.
W/C 12th January
We have had an excellent week in Year 5! We started off with our amazing Viking Workshop on Monday. We all came in to school dressed as Vikings and fully embraced the Viking way of life. We made candles, ink, pots for metal moulding as well as bags. We also had a go at learning how to be warriors! We finished the day with an archaeological experience, digging for objectings and then classifying them!
To continue with this learning, on Tuesday we completed our first History lesson, looking at who the Vikings were and where they came from.
In Maths this week, we have been working on multiplying by a 2 digit number using long multiplication. We started of with a 2 digit number then moved onto a three digit number and by the end of the week master multiplying a 4 digit number by a 2 digit number.
In English, we have continued our sentence stacking lessons based on 'One Small Step'. We have used time adverbials, modal verbs and relative clauses this week.
In PSHE, we continued our work on dreams and goals and looked at our dream jobs, we then researched the steps we would need to take to achieve this!
In Science, we looked at how the bodies in our solar sytem move, focusing on rotating on an axis and orbiting the sun.
In RE, we learnt about Ummah being the worldwide community of Islam and how some of the 5 pillars of Islam impact this.
In Geography, we leanr about what happens to a river on its journey, following it from its source to the sea. We learnt about meanders and how ox-bow lakes are formed.
W/C 5th January
We had a great first week back in Year 5. We have hit the ground running, ready to start 2026!
We have picked up where we left off before Christmas with Maths, continuing our work on fractions. We started off the week by subtracting from a mixed number, before looking at breaking the whole. We then completed our first unit on fractions by looking at subtracting two mixed numbers. Next, we moved onto our new unit of Multiplication and Divsion, we started off by multiplying a 4 digit number by a 1 digit number and then looked at how to multiply a 2 digit number by a 2 digit number using the area model, also known as the grid method.
In English, we started our new unit based on the short film, 'One Small Step'. We started off our sentence stacking lessons by using complex sentences and a colon for a list. Then we looked at alliterative dialogue and another complex sentence. We also, completed an Experience Day where we read 'The Heart and the Bottle', we dicussed the feelings associated with loosing something or someone special. In our final sentence stacking lesson of the week, we looked at verbs, adjectives and inner thoughts, foreshadowing.
This week, we also started our new Geography unit, by looking at the water cycle and how water moves around the world. We then completed our second lesson, looking at what a river is and how they are formed. We started our new Science unit, on space, looking at what a solar system is and what ours is like. We started our unit in RE, on Islam. We looked at what happens at a mosque including identifying its key features. We also completed a PSHE lesson, where we investigated jobs.
