Summer Term 2023

Reminders

PE is on Tuesday's and Friday's. 

Homework will be set on Purple Mash on a Friday and is due in the following Friday. Children will also be bringing home spelling sheets, with spelling to practice every night, this needs to be returned on a Friday. 

Children are asked to read at home a minimum of five times a week, please ensure homework diaries are signed and brought into school. 

W/C 10th July

It is getting closer to the Summer Holidays now, with one week left to go! We have continued to work hard in all our lessons. In English, we have completed our final Big Write, a Newspaper report on the sinking on the Titanic, written in 1912. 

In Maths, we have finished our unit on Converting Units and moved onto Volume and Capacity. 

We have also finished our RE work on Sikhism, looking at what Sikhs believe about equality and what happens in the Gurdwara. 

In Science, we completed our final experiment, looking at what happens when we combine materials.

We completed our final Art lessons, creating our own piece of Illusion Art! 

We also enjoyed a taster morning at St Georges, where we had a tour of the school and carried out some Art, Geography and English lessons, before enjoying lunch! 

 

W/C 3rd July

We have had a very busy week in Year 5. The children all helped out at Reception and KS1's Sports Day on Wednesday, looking after a small group and supervising them during the Round Robin Activities in the morning. They were fantastic role models for the younger children! On Thursday they then took part in their own Sports Day. Some excellent performances showing determination and resilience! 

We also managed to get some more of our Maths completed, converting units of length and then converting imperial and metric units, we then finished the week with converting units of time. 

In English, the children finished drafting their Big Write, a newspaper report on the sinking of the Titanic, before editing and starting to create their published piece. 

We also did some Geography, where we looked at Brazils exports before comparing them to the UK's. 

We also enjoyed French this week and manged to fit in two PE lessons! What a busy week! 

W/C 26th June

It has been assessment week this week, I am very proud of how hard the children worked on their Reading, Maths and Science tests. We have also been working on our final Big Write of the school year, writing a Newspaper Report on the sinking of the Titanic. 

We have also completed some more Maths this week, looking at negative numbers and then we moved onto Converting units. We started with Kiliograms and Kilometres, before looking at Millimetres and Millilitres. 

We have completed some more History. We looked at the question, Did the Mayans really predict the end of the world? We looked at the Maya Long Count and why some people believed the world was going to end on 21st December 2012. 

In Science, we learnt about irreversible changes. We looked at how burning wood, heating clay and making bread are all irreversible changes, before we made some cakes to prove it!

We also did some PSHE, looking at age restrictions and responsibilities. We looked at why there are age restrictions on certain films, games, activities and products and why they are necessary. 

W/C 19th June

Another hot week! We have been working hard all week! We have completed our work on decimals, after looking at decimals sequences and then multiplying and dividing decimals. We then moved onto our next unit of negative numbers. 

In English, we spent time researching facts about the Titianic We then planned our Big Write, which is a newspaper report on the sinking of the Titanic, written in 1912. We have started writing the introduction and the first papragraph of our newspaper report. 

In Geography, we looked at the UK's biggest exports. In History, we looked at chocolate and why it was the most import item in Mayan times. We also completed some art, looking at how artists use space and colour in their artwork to create illusion and then having a go at creating our own illusions. 

We also enjoyed PE this week, Cricket...in the rain and Athletics, along with French with Madame Roche. 

W/C 12th June

It has been a great, but very hot, week! The children have worked really hard in the heat! In Maths, we have been continuing our work on decimals, adding and subtracting decimals with the same number of decimal places and then moving onto adding and subtracting decimals with different numbers of decimal places. 

In English, we have carried on reading 'Kaspar, Prince of Cats' and completed lots of research and writing. We looked at the different classes in Victorian/Edwardian times and how life would be for children of the different classes. We then looked at icebergs and wrote a report of facts about icebergs, we then looked at using modal verbs to offer advice to ships sailing in the North Atlantic. We also looked at the difference between facts and opinions. 

in Geography, we looked at the main trade routes across the world, looking specifically at the Suez canal and the Panama canal. 

In RE, we continued our work on Sikhism and looked at what happens at the langar. 

We completed our final lesson on Spreadsheets in computing, before we move onto Databases next week. 

On Wednesday, we enjoyed our Rock Kidz workshop, where we learnt a song about being yourself, 'Nobody Like Me!' Check out the song on You Tube! We loved the dance battle and the air guitar battle and throughly enjoyed the final assembly! 

 

W/C 5th June

A lovely first week back after half term. Year 5 have got straight back into their learning. In Maths, we finished off our work on Position and Direction, looking at Lines of Symmetry, Relfection and Reflection using coordinates. We then moved onto our second unit on Decimals. We started by adding a subtracting decimals within 1 and looked at complements to 1. 

In English, we have picked up where we left off with our book 'Kaapar, Prince of Cats'. We looked at using the perfect form, using sophisticated conjunctions and using commas to avoid ambiguity. We researched facts on the Titanic and then wrote an edvertisment leaflet. 

In Geography, we started our new work on how money travels around the world, by looking at the global market. 

In History, we are continuing our work on the Ancient Maya. We looked at the Maya calandar and why it was an important change. 

In RE, we started our new unit of work on Sikhism.  We looked at the main beliefs of Sikhism in our first lesson. 

On Friday, we enjoyed our own Songkran festival, which is a water festival marking the beginning of the traditional Thai New Year. We joined in with the whole school and had a great time! 

W/C 22nd May

A very busy final week of term. We have been working through our unit on Position and Direction in Maths, looking at reading and plotting coordinates and then solving problems with coordinates. We then moved onto Translation ans translation with coordinates. 

In English, er have been enjoying reading some more of our new book, 'Kaspar, Prince of Cats'. We looked at some of the different characters and drew inferences from thier actions. We then wrote a letter to the main character, Jonny Trott's, Mother. 

We completed our learning on Hinduism this week, looking at the artefacts that are used in prayer as well as looking into why family worship is important to Hindu's. We then finished off with our end of unit assessment. 

In Science, we looked at how we can use our knowledge of properties to help us to design things. We each designed a coat, looking at what properties we want it to have. Once designed we then tested out the materials suitability. We completed a second science lesson, looking at if we can separate materials we have combined. We used sieves, filter paper and evaporation. We will continue our work on materials after half term. 

In Geography we completed our learning on Mexico, lookin at why it is a land of contrasts. We learnt about the biodiveristy in Mexico and the different species of plants and animals that live thier. We then compared the different landscapes. Finally, we completed our end of unit assessment. 

In History, we looked at the Maya game of Pok-a-Tok and asked the question, did the Maya play football like us? We will continue our work on the Ancient Maya after half term. 

We also completed our work on Big Band Music, looking at how it has influenced modern music and completed our end of unit assessment. 

In Computing, we carried out some more work on spreadsheets, looking at how to use a count tool and then looking at how to use formulae to solve everyday problems. 

 

 

W/C 15th May

Another week completed! Year 5 have worked hard, yet again! We have completed our Maths work on Geometry and spent time calclating angles on a straight line and then looked at angles and lengths of shapes. We completed some work on regular and irregular polygons, before moving onto perpendicular and parallel lines. Finally, we looked at 3D shapes, the number of faces, edges and vertices on different 3D shapes. 

In English, we completed an extra lesson on how we can use different deviices for description, looking at expanded noun phrases, similes, metaphors and personification. We then completed a DIRT Activity, improving one section of our Big Writes. We then moved onto our new book, Kaspar, Prince of Cats, looking again at expanded noun phrases, we then wrote a letter as Johnny Trott to the mother he never knew. 

In Science, we completed our investigation on how we can group different materials. In History we looked into Maya writing and what is tells us about the culture and society of the Maya. We also enjoyed an art lesson with Mrs Freeman, looking at illusion art. We critiqued a piece of art, before having a go at creating our own piece of illusion art. 

On Thursday, we completed our Sponsored run, 10 laps of the school, which equalted to approximately 2.5 miles. Well done to all the children taking part!

 

W/C 8th May

Another four day week, I hope you all enjoyed the Extra Bank Holiday!

We have been working through our unit on Geometry this week in Maths. We looked at measuring acute and obtuse angles, using a protractor and then had a go at drawing some angles of different sizes. We then looked at calculating angles around a point. 

In English, we spent this week completing our 'Big Write', including spending some time to edit and improve our work. We then published them on Friday. 

We also completed some more RE, looking at the different ceremonies that take place in the Mandir. 

In Geography, we continued our work on Mexico. We used atlas' to find the different physical features in Mexico and focused our learning on the Rio Grande, the longest river in Mexico, and the Sierra Madre (Occidential and Oriental) the mountain range on Mexico. 

We then started our Science unit, looking at how we can group materials based on their properties. We did some work on different properties and will have a go at testing some materials next week. 

W/C 1st May

A short week, with the Bank Holiday on Monday, but Year 5 have still managed to get lots of learning completed! 

In Maths, we have finished our unit on Statistics, looking at Tables, Two-way Tables and Timetables. We then moved onto our Geometry unit, looking at Shape. Our first lesson focused on understanding degrees. 

In English, we summarised the story of 'The Sleeper and the Spindle' before planning our own sequel to the story. We planned our own adventure with the Queen and the three dwarfs, trying to add elements of other fairytales to our stories. We started the write the beginning and the middle sections and will complete them next week. 

In RE, we started our unit Hinduism and looked at how Hindus worship. We compared worship in the Mandir to the home and looked at how it compares to other religions. 

In History, we continued our work on the Maya. We looked at what Popol Vuh tells us about the Maya, including the creation story and how the Maya believe the first humans were made from Maize dough. 

We also started our new Music unit, looking at Big Band Music, its History, influences and styles. We thoroughly enjoyed listening to some Big Band Music and were surprised with how many songs we recognised. We were able to identify the different instruments used. 

W/C 24th April

Another busy week in Year 5! We have manged to complete our work on Measure - Perimeter and Area, finishing with finding the area of compound shapes. We then moved onto our unit of work on Statistics. We spent time learning how to draw Line Graphs and then moved onto interpreting data from a Line Graph and a Dual Line Graph. 

In English, we have now finished reading 'The Sleeper and the Spindle'. We looked at how to use brackets to add additional information. We also looked at drawing inferences, we looked at the possible backstory of one of our characters. We wrote a book review, looking at if we were surprsied by anything in the story. Finally we wrote a letter, in role of the queen, informing the prince whether she would be returning or not!

In Geography, we looked at Mexico City. We looked at its location in Mexico and that is sits in the Valley of Mexico, which is 2,240m above sea level. 

We had a PSCO and Police Officer in school this week, to runa workshop on Safer Stangers and reminding the children how to be be safe outside and online.

We enjoyed Art with Mrs Freeman this week, looking at the movement of Illusion. We looked at the recognisable features of an art piece and whether they are created for the movement or the viewer. 

 

W/C 18th April

A great first week back, after a well deserved break. Year 5 have come back with a great attitude and have kicked off with areas of new learning. 

In Maths, we started our work on Measure - Perimeter and Area. We looked at finding the perimeter of rectangles, rectilinear shapes and polygons, before moving onto finding the area of rectangles. 

In English, we have continued reading 'The Sleeper and the Spindle'. We looked at synonyms and antonyms, to hel us to describe two opposing characters. We looked at using a range of sentence forms, using emotions and adverbs to create our own narrative for a page in the book with no text. Then we looked at using modal verbs to indicate degrees of possibility, when coming up with a potential back story for one of the characters. Finally, we looked the the subjunctive form and linked it to similes, to help us to describe the sleeping princess. 

We started our new Geography unit on Mexico. We used atlas' and computers, to help us to locate Mexico and describe its location on the globe. 

We also started our new History unit on the Maya. We looked at the timeline of world History to see when it occured in relation to other civilisations which we have studied previously. We also looked at where the Maya lived and what those countries are called now. 

We enjoyed our PE lessons, in games we started our work on Volleyball and we also enjoyed some problem solving lessons in OAA.
