Reminders

PE is on Monday and Tuesday.   

Homework will be sent home on a  Friday and is due in the following Friday.

Children are asked to read at home a minimum of five times a week, please log reads on the Boom Reader App

W/C 2nd June

We have had a great first week back after half term. Year 5 have been working really hard in all areas of the curriculum. 

in Maths, we started our next unit on Decimals. We have completed lessons this week, looking at decimals which are less than 1, making decimals add up to one and then adding and subtracting decimlas with the same number of decimal places. 

In English, we have started a new book, 'The Nowhere Emporium' by Ross Mackenzie. This week, we had an experience day, where we role played our action and emotions when we stummbled across a mysterious door! We then completed three sentence stacking lessons. We used relative clauses, similes, time adverbials, modal verbs and dialogue. 

In Geography, we started our new unit which looks at the question, 'How does money travel around the world?' We started off by looking at what the global market is. We learnt about trade and imports and exports and the reasons that countries import and export products and services. 

In History, we continued our learning from last half term on the Ancient Maya. We looked at the Maya calandar system, including the Haab, Tzolkin, Calendar Round and the Long Count and looked at why they were expert astronomers. 

This week, we also enjoyed a Rock Music Assembly and a workshop from the Mental Health Team on my super self! 

W/C 19th May

The last week of a short term. Year 5 have continued to work hard!

In Maths, we have completed our unit on Position and Direction. We looked at translation and then translation with coordinates. Next, we learnt about lines of symmetry before looking at reflection. 

In Geography, we completed our unit on Mexico. First we looked at interesting features that can be found in Mexico, including the Rio Grande and the Sierra Madre Occidental and the Sierra Madre Oriental. Next, we learnt about why Mexico is a land of contrasts. We learnt about the different landscapes; Mountainous regaions, rainforests, deserts, cities, coastal regions. We also looked at the different climates in Mexico, looking at its postion in relation to the equator. Finally, we completed our end of unit quiz, to see what we can remember!

In RE, we completed our unit on Hinduism. First, we looked at the different artefacts that are used in prayer, including the items found on a Puja tray. Next, we learnt about why fmailiy worship is important to Hindus, before completing our end of unit quiz.

In History, we looked at the ancient Maya game called Pok-a-Tok. We learnt about how the game is played and its cultural and religious significance. We will be carrying on with our learning on the ancient Maya next term. 

In Science, we continued our learning on materials and there properties. We used our knowledge of properties of materials to design a coat suitable for wet weather. We chose approprtite materials to use and them tested them out to see if we had chose wisely. We will be continuing our work on materials after half term.

W/C 12th May

We have had a great week in Year 5. We have been working hard on our Independent Write, a biography of Isaac Newton. We spent time drafting and editing before publishing them. 

In Maths, we have finished our unit on Shape by completing lessons finding lengths and angles in shapes, looking at regular and irregular polygons and then finally 3D shapes - looking at verticies, edges and faces. We then moved onto our next unit on Position and Direction. We looked at reading and plotting coordinates, before completing some probelm solving with coordinates. 

In Geography, we looked at the Capital City of Mexico - Mexico City. We looked at its precise location and then focused on how the land is used and why the population is so high. 

In History, we learnt about Ancient Maya Writing. We looked at the importance of their writing and why it is different to other ancient civilisations. 

In RE, we learnt about the different ceremonies that take place in the Mandir. These included Puja and what Prasad is. We also leanrt about the Aarti ceremony and how they use Bhajan's. We then looked at how Murtis are used in worship. 

 

W/C 5th May

I hope you all enjoyed the extra day off this week, with the May Bank Holiday? This did not stop Year 5 cracking on with lots of learning!

In Maths, we have continued our work on Shape, by looking at measuring angles using a protractor. We then moved onto drawing lines and angles accurately, before learning how to calculate angles around a point and on a straight line. 

In English, we completed our final sentence stacking lesson, looking at inverted commas for quotes, emotive words and using the re- prefix. We then started the independent write process - creating our own success criteria and planning a biography on Sir Isaac Newton. 

In Science, we started oour new unit on Materials. We looked at different ways we can group materials, by testing out their different properties, before making our own groups. 

In History, we read the Mayan creation story and discussed what this tells us about the Ancient Maya and thought about the differences and similarities to other societies and religions. 

Finally, we completed another PSHE lesson on Healthy Me. We discussed alcohol and the dangers it can pose and how it can impact anti-social behaviour. 

W/C 28th April

We have had a lovely week in Year 5. We started off with our whole school trip to Rand Farm, where we enjoyed feeding the lambs, learning about milk and a tour of the hatchery. We also had a go at Archery, took a tractor ride and enjoyed the play areas! 

In Maths this week, we finished off our work on Statistics by reading and interpreting timetables. We then moved onto our unit of shape, where we started off by understanding and using degress, before looking at classifying and estimating angles. 

In English, we completed some more sentence stacking lessons, focusing on using similes, rhetorical questions using modal verbs, metaphors, conjunctions and complex sentences. We also enjoyed an experience day, where we had a go at narrating a documentary like David Attenborough. 

In Geography, we started our new unit by looking at where Mexico is. We used an atlas to locate Mexico and looked at the neighbouring countries. We then describe its location using compass points and grid references. 

In RE, we started our learning on Hinduism, we looked at Hindu worship at home and in the Mandir. 

We also had a visit from the Sleaford PCSO's this week, who carried out a workshop on 'Money Mules'. We learnt about fraud and how to spot it. 

In PSHE, we completed a lesson on being healthy, looking specifically of the dangers of smoking and vaping. 

W/C 22nd April

A nice first week back in Year 5. Even though we were only in for four days, we still managed to fit in lots of learning! In Maths, we started our new unit on Statistics. We started off by drawing line graphs before moving on to reading and interpreting line graphs. Next, we read and interpreted tables followed by two-way tables.

In English, we continued our work on our Biography of David Attenborough. We completd two sentence stacking lessons. The first was based on facts about David, using -ify verbs, similes and onomatopoeia. In the second, we looked at the later part of his life journey - using dashes for parenthesis, -ly adverbs and complex sentence. 

In History, we started our new unit on the Ancient Maya. We answered the question, where and when did the Maya live - looking at where they fit on the timeline and the area they lived in, including the modern countries that they are now called. 

In Art, we looked at if recognisable features of an art piece are created for the movement or the viewer. 

We also completed some PSHE, looking at resposible and respectful behaviours online. We also looked at our digital footprint and the use of apps on mobile phones. We discussed the age restrictions on these and why they are there.
