Well……… We’ve made it (nearly) to the Christmas Holidays!

It’s been a really busy term ending with a panto and a Christmas party.

Yesterday we enjoyed the Pantomime in Boston, which really made us all feel festive and then today we had our Christmas party. The children all joined in with the singing and dancing wearing their Santa hats.

After the holidays, we will be exploring the books of Julia Donaldson as well as researching her as an author. In maths we will be moving on to multiplication and division and in Science – weather and the seasons.

We all wish you a very happy Christmas and a Happy New Year!

  3. Mark paid £24.00 in total for the boxes of ornaments. How much did each box cost?
  4. Santa’s elves work for 9 hours a day. How many hours do they work in 5 days?

Week commencing 21st November 2016

We’ve been continuing our work on traditional tales which has been really enjoyable. The children have engaged with the characters and the repeated phrases within the stories.

Can you guess the following traditional tales?

 Week commencing 14th November 2016

We’ve been doing some amazing writing about ‘The Elves and the Shoemaker’.

We had great fun hot seating the little elves in our class and then after looking at a picture, made a plan of what the characters looked like, what they like doing and how they behave. From this plan, we then wrote up our ideas into sentences. We are now trying to include more detailed ideas and conjunctions.

and   but   because   if   when

In maths we have been exploring how number lines can help us to add 2, 2 digit numbers. We also explored what happens when you add 2 even numbers together and 2 odd numbers together.

Ask your children if they can explain the pattern.

2+4=      1+3=

6+2=       5+9=

6+8=      7+11=

What do you notice?

Week commencing 7th November 2016

This week we have started our new topic on Traditional Tales. We have shared some of the well known stories and explored some of the characters.

Our focus story has been on ‘The Elves and the Shoemaker’. This story was not well known by the children but please ask your child about it as we have already done lots of work looking at the characters and enjoyed drama activities where we interviewed the ‘elves’ in class. Such fun!

We also have a workshop set up in the classroom where the children can make some outfits and shoes for elves as well as construct using wood and nails, to make work benches and beds for the story characters too.

Week commencing 24th October - Half Term

A HUGE thank you to all of the parents and children that made puppets and puppet theatres over the half term holidays. I am amazed at the wonderful creations that we have seen and shared together.

We hope you enjoyed making them as much as we have enjoyed looking at them.

Week commencing 10th October 2016

The highlight of this week was definitely our trip to the library on Wednesday afternoon along with a nature walk on the way back to school. We spent a lovely hour exploring, reading and enjoying lots of books.

On the way back, we explored the grounds of St Deny’s Church where we collected lots of leaves, conkers and even saw some lovely little mushroom circles.

The leaves we used to make hedgehogs later in the week which are hopefully now being displayed at home.

Thank you to all the parents we saw on Parents evening, it was lovely to talk about how well your children are responding to learning in Year 2. Please keep telling us what you are pleased with as well as discussing with us any concerns.

Week commencing 3rd October 2016

This week in Year 2, we have been using our sewing skills to make Native American headdresses. We have learned how to do running stitch and cross stitch.

Don’t they look great?

In English this week we’re looking at a clip called ‘La Luna’. Please ask your children about it and if you get chance, have a look at it on ‘You Tube’.

From this clip we have bee exploring the characters and the children have created some beautifully descriptive writing about the story.

Well done everyone!

Week commencing 26th September 2016

Another busy week in Year 2!

We’re continuing to work hard in maths and literacy and have particularly enjoyed our ICT lessons this week.

Our focus is on monitoring and control where we have been using the ipads to explore an App called ‘Scratch Jn’. This is an App you could download at home also for additional practice. The children learned to manipulate the character, move it and change the colour and background. Well done everyone.

Week commencing 19th September 2016

The children have been busy this week developing their native america tepee and dreamcatchers.

Week commencing 12th September 2016.

What a busy week!

Our English focus has been on our basic skills, to ensure that all letters are formed correctly and written on the line, to ensure that writing is structured into clear sentences using capital letters and full stops and that enough work is completed during the time given in each session.

We have been exploring instruction writing and really enjoyed making ‘Marvellous Medicines’ this week as we celebrated Roald Dahl Day. We had some very interesting mixtures and poor Sue ended up with black hair!!! Ask your children about what happened!

Our maths focus continues to consolidate the children’s understanding of basic skills so that they are confident to identify patterns and connections between numbers. We continue to look at number bonds, times tables: 2,5 and 10 as well as this week exploring place value. The children were partitioning numbers and able to explain their value depending on the place of the number.

We have been looking at the artwork of Roy Henry Vickers (First Nation Artist). The children have created their own Roy Henry Vickers painting using bright, bold colours and mixing techniques. We have been very impressed with their paintbrush control...and facial expressions!

This week saw the finished tepee in our classroom. It’s AMAZING!!! The children painted the panels but we owe a HUGE thank you to Mrs James who very kindly sewed the panels together. Please pop into class and have a look.

Week commencing 5th September 2016.

We’ve had a great start to our first full week in Year 2.

Our topic of Native America has really engaged the children and we have been making mini tepees and totem poles. This has linked nicely with the literacy work on reading and writing instructions.

We have also been attempting to make a life size tepee using fabric, which the children have painted. We will endeavour to put the finished pictures up when it has been constructed!!!

In maths we are exploring number bonds to 10, counting forwards and backwards in 2’s and place value. The children are learning the value of 2 digit number and partitioning them into tens and units.

Keep up the hard work Year 2!
