Physical Education

PE is delivered by a Specialist Teacher and all children receive two hours a week . Our PE sessions are both indoor and outdoor. In Reception and Year 1, the focus is on mastering basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination. Pupils are encouraged to participate in team games and to develop simple tactics for being an effective team member. Key Stage 2 pupils will also complete lessons inside and outside and may also visit other facilities including the local swimming pool and other local schools. Swimming is introduced to the timetable from Key Stage 2. We ensure wider participation in the community by involvement in interschool Netball and Football league. Using our sports premium, we buy into the Carres Secondary outreach programme which enables us to enter intra-school competitive sports competitions every Friday often competing in sports unknown to the children.

The general programmes of study emphasise that all children should plan, perform and evaluate their work as part of the Physical Education programme, but the main emphasis is on participation.

There are specific programmes of study which outline six areas of activity that children should be involved in throughout each key stage. These areas are:

Dance – KS1 and KS2
Games – KS1 and KS2
Gymnastics – KS1 and KS2
Swimming – KS2
Athletics – KS2
Outdoor and Adventurous Activities – KS2

Each unit of work should be 8-12 hours long.

The Val Sabin scheme of work will be used to support and guide teacher’s in their planning and lessons. Other resources are also available to support teaching. Opportunities to link P.E with work in other areas will be identified and used.

CPD will be arranged by the PE Coordinator. CPD opportunities will be provided through our links with Carre’s Grammar School as well as the School Games Organisers.

Children in KS1 and KS2 are entitled to 2 hours of quality P.E. lessons a week. This is timetabled with our PE teacher to ensure all children receive the required 2 hours of quality PE.  Children in Foundation stage each receive 1 hour of quality PE a week with the PE teacher.

All children not participating in a P.E. lesson must bring a note. Children who can not do P.E. because they have not got appropriate kit must borrow spare kit to enable them to take part. A text message will then be sent home to ensure their kit is in school for the next lesson.

Out of School Hours Learning (OSHL)

All Key Stage 2 children will have the opportunity to join sports clubs held after school.

Key Stage 1/Foundation children will be involved in clubs where possible and this is strongly supported through our links with Carre’s Grammar School and Boston United in the Community.

Activities available to the children include netball, football, cross country, rugby, volleyball, multi skills, athletics, tennis, dodgeball, dance, gymnastics, rounders and cricket. The time of year these clubs are held will depend on the ‘season’ for a particular sport and the dates of competitions.

Children in Year 5 and 6 will be given the opportunity to take part in the local leagues and competitions for netball and football.

Children across Key Stage 2 will be able to enter competitions throughout the year. There are competitions available for swimming, netball, athletics, cross country, rounders, football and rugby.

Children across both Key Stages will be able to take part in festivals run by the School Sports Partnership.
