Spring Term 2019

Week commencing 11.3.19

This week has been assessment week. The children have completed a Reading, Maths, Arithmetic and SPaG test. I am so proud of all of the class who have shown me they have made incredible progress. Reading scores have increased dramatically, which is so pleasing to see! WELL DONE Year 5!!

Week commencing 4.3.19

Adding and subtracting fractions have been the order of the week. Adding fractions with the same and sometimes different denominators. In English we have been learning about writing in the past tense - more specifically, writing in the past tense and staying with that tense within a piece of work. We're obviously still reading Street Child. **SPOILER** Jim's Ma has died... :(

Week commencing 25.2.19

Welcome back to Term 4! We are over half way through now and beginning to realy motor along with our learning. This week we have been introduced to the world of fractions, decimals and percentages; in particular, equivalent, improper and mixed number fractions. In English, we have begun reading our novel: Street Child, which is about a boy (Jim) in Victorian Britain. We have been gripped by his terrible story immediately and can't wait to read more!

Week commencing 11.2.19

We've been back a week and we have been using our knowledge of extreme earth to plan and make a clay model of the journey of a river. We used recycled products (thinking about how we can save the Earth) to make the base layer before covering in clay and then painting. The children put great effort in to this and produced some truly fantastic models!

Week commencing 28.1.19

For our English this week we have been completing our persuasive text. We recently discovered the rec is being used for a new housing development and have written to the local MP to persuade her not to use this space. Some fantastic pieces were written and we're hopeful of a positive response soon. In Maths we have been dividing: dividing 4 digit numbers by 1 and dividing with remainders. Our topic lessons have taken us to dangerous places were earthquakes often hit. We learnt about how to stay safe if an earthquake hits.

Week commencing 21.1.19

We have been multiplying 4 digit numbers by 1 digits this week. We then quickly moved on to multiplying 2 digits by 2 digits and ended the week on multiplying 4 digits by 2 digits. I hard slog on this new Y5 skills for the class, but we got there in the end! We have been learning about hyperbole in English; if your child is making up outrageous stories - that's my fault...

Week commencing 14.1.19

This week, we have been learning to multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1,000 as well as looking at multiples of 10, 100 and 1,000. We have been using co-ordinating and subordinating conjunctions in English to help develop our sentences. We have been looking at rivers and the journey from source to mouth.

Week commencing 7.1.19

Welcome back. Hope you had a fantastic break! We have cracked straight on with Multiplication and Division. This week we have been looking at Multiples/Factors and common factors as well as prime/squared and cubed numbers. In English we have been looking at emotive language as a skill for our persuasive writing. We have begun our topic of Extreme Earth and have looked at volcanoes and mountains.
