We’ve made it to the final week of the year!

We are enjoying  our last week together in Year 2.

Week commencing 10th July 2017

This week has been transition week, so the children have spent most of the time getting to know their new teacher Miss Jackson and adapting to Key Stage 2.

Some special treats have also taken place this week. On Monday, they had the chance to learn about a special Islamic celebration which has recently happened, called Eid. We learned more about the Muslim faith including the holy place which all Muslims visit called Mecca and even got chance to dress up in some very special celebration clothes.

The children also had a go at some Bollywood dancing, learning some mudras, which are Indian hand dance gestures.

On Wednesday we enjoyed our day at Belton House. We explored the garden, the beautiful tiny church and finished off on the adventure playground. The sun was shining and it was lovely to spend the day together.

Week commencing 3rd July 2017

We had an amazing time at Tattershall castle and climbed right to the top which was apparently over 100 steps according to the children!!!

After exploring the castle and the grounds we enjoyed a picnic in the sunshine before heading off to Tattershall farm park. We saw lambs, pigs, horses, donkeys and even got to stroke George, the very large and very friendly rabbit. We ended our day in the play area before heading back to school.

As always, the children were amazing and I am always very proud to take them out on trips.

Week commencing 26th June 2017

This week we have been working hard on writing diaries. We have continued with our topic on ‘Treasure Island’ and imagined that we were Jim Hawkins – searching for adventure and treasure.

The children have done some wonderful work and are very much getting prepared for Year 3.

We are also continuing with our science topic on ‘Animals and their habitats’. This will be explored further during the next few week and we also have our trip to Tattershall Farm Park next week to look forward to. Please get your permission slips in ASAP .

Whilst we have great fun on our class trips, they are also of great educational value.

We’ve been continuing with our music project on Treasure Island this week which links the story to a series of different songs all with a variety of musical styles. We’ve especially enjoyed some rapping this week!

If you would like to explore the programme further then it can be found at http://www.bbc.co.uk/learning/schoolradio/subjects/english/treasure_island

We’ve also had a go at tie dying this week, which was great fun. We  used different tying techniques onto white t-shirts and the result we’re brilliant. The t-shirts will be on sale at the summer fayre.

Week commencing 5th June 2017

A warm welcome back to our final term in Year 2. We have lots of exciting things planned which we are really looking forward to. Our first trip to Yorkshire Wildlife Park is next week – let’s hope the sun shines and we can enjoy a day out seeing the animals.

In Literacy we have been looking at poetry this week. We have read the poem ‘The Magic Box’ which we then used to write some poetry of our own.

The Magic Box by Kit Wright.

I will put in the box

the swish of a silk sari on a summer night,

fire from the nostrils of a Chinese dragon,

the tip of a tongue touching a tooth.

I will put in the box

a snowman with a rumbling belly,

a sip of the bluest water from Lake Lucerne,

a leaping spark from an electric fish.

I will put into the box

three violet wishes spoken in Gujarati,

the last joke of an ancient uncle,

and the first smile of a baby.

I will put into the box

a fifth season and a black sun,

a cowboy on a broomstick

and a witch on a white horse.

My box is fashioned from ice and gold and steel,

with stars on the lid and secrets in the corners.

Its hinges are the toe joints of dinosaurs.

I shall surf in my box

on the great high-rolling breakers of the wild Atlantic,

then wash ashore on a yellow beach

the color of the sun.

In maths, we are concentrating on mental maths and times tables this week. This is something we really appreciate you supporting with at home and needs constant practice.

Our topic this term is animals and their habitats which links to our trip next week and further work in our Science lessons about the different habitats that animals live and survive in.

Week commencing 22nd May

This week we have been focussing on spelling, punctuation and grammar in preparation for our final SATs test. The children have worked so hard this term and we are extremely proud of them.

Next term we will be learning about animals and their habitats  as our main topic. This will also include our trip to Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Please ensure that you bring back the permission slips as soon as possible.

Have a wonderful half term!

Week commencing 15th May

A HUGE well done to the children in Year 2 who have done amazingly with their Reading SATs paper this week. We are so very proud of all your hard work.

We have also revisited time in maths this week. The children have all made their own clocks and used them to tell the time. They also wrote up a set of instructions on how they made them. The children will be bringing them home after we have finished our work on them.

 Week commencing 8th May 2017

We are continuing to focus on reading comprehension and maths in preparation for our SATs. The children are working very hard and we are extremely proud of them.

In geography, we have continued with our map work and identified the countries and capital cities in the UK.. We are hoping to explore and find out about the flags for each of these countries too.

The United Kingdom

Label the Countries below

Week commencing 2nd May 2017

A short but still busy week in Year 2!

We are now well under way with our preparations for SATs and the children are really working hard.

We have also been exploring the continents and countries in a world map. Ask your child if they can name the 7 continents of the world. We have also looked at a map of the UK and identified the 4 countries. This will lead onto identifying the capital cities and further map work.

Can you name the continents and oceans on this world map?

Week commencing 24th April 2017

This week we are continuing with our preparation for SATs and will be focussing particularly on reading comprehension. The children will have 2 reading papers and will be asked to answer questions about a text (or texts) which the have to read and complete independently. We will continue to practice this in school although any further reading done at home would be of huge benefit along with asking them questions about what they have read.

In maths we are continuing with addition and subtraction, looking at past papers and preparing for the tests. Again, if your child can continue to go on maths whizz and become fluent in their 2,5,10 and 3 times tables, this would be of great help.

There is also the Lexia club every morning from 8:30 which your child can attend to support them with reading and spelling. Just let Sue or myself know if your child would like to come.

Week commencing 18th April 2017

This week we have started our topic on The Sea. We have learned about lighthouses and why they are important. We also watched a short animation about a lighthouse keeper and produced some amazing descriptive writing about it. Using adjectives and conjunctions.

Thank you also to those who bought in Lighthouses that had been made at home during the holidays. They were all unique and utterly AMAZING!!!

In maths we have been revisiting  addition and subtraction and are very much preparing for our end of Key stage tests.

The SAT tests for Year 2 will take place throughout the month of May and will be done in an environment which the children are used to,  ensuring that they can complete them to the best of their ability.

If you have any questions about the SATS then please come and speak to Sue or myself.
